Pedestrian Scramble at State and Jackson

Chicago seems to be trying to emulate Tokyo with a pedestrian-only free-for-all crossing at State and Jackson.  News crews were all over the place, city workers were configuring the lights and…Continue

"I generally think anyone feeling the need to announce they're passing is probably passing too closely and should just wait for a proper gap.  If more bikes could slow down from time to time when there's congestion everything would be…"

Tricolor replied to Jim Reho's discussion Why no lights?
"The rear lights on a Divvy are barely visible in total darkness at 200 feet, let alone in a light-saturated area.  Then they're neigh-invisible until you're about fifty feet away.  Far too short a distance for an overtaking car."

Tricolor replied to Jim Reho's discussion Why no lights?
"You should clean and adjust your headlights.  If you can't see something fifty feet ahead that's moving like someone pedaling a bike moves there's something wrong with them.  If you have fog lights turn them off since they…"

Tricolor replied to Jim Reho's discussion Why no lights?
"When cars are stopped waiting for a light or a stop sign and you're coming up on them is when you need a strong front light.  Otherwise no one will know you're there and it makes getting hooked or doored much more likely."

Tricolor replied to Jim Reho's discussion Why no lights?
"A light that can be seen by cars is expensive.  In my experience rear reflectors are fine since a car will light them up, but someone riding behind a car needs a very strong light to be seen in a dimming mirror.  Add in the usual bad…"

Yes sir, it's that time of year!  We have a friend in common who is set on coming along, so I'm content that I've at least got one companion.  I've done some route cleaning, upgraded my bags, gear, and tent, switched to solar power, made arrangements which should make the ride a bit cheaper, backed up the route to my phone, bought new tires, etc...  I'm going to stay in west Madison an extra day, so I won't be around to shepherd anyone home.  Also, all the bridges along the Glacial Drumlin have been completed, so bring your trail pass or you'll be reminded to get one!
