I'm headed to Pittsburgh on Sunday to bike down to Washington.  Sadly the second half of the trip is through the C&O Canal National Park, and it's closed. The owners of various B&Bs where I'm…Continue

The search function still isn't returning anything but I've got a new frame that I'm cleaning up (removing some paint overspray on the fork crown and brake nubs) and was considering what to do about…Continue

Pedestrian Scramble at State and Jackson

Chicago seems to be trying to emulate Tokyo with a pedestrian-only free-for-all crossing at State and Jackson.  News crews were all over the place, city workers were configuring the lights and…Continue

Tricolor replied to Jeff Schneider's discussion Lemming Left Cross
"Sounds like a critical mass of people turning left. I can't say I see much of this in the US, though, except at the tail end of a green signal where the lights aren't timed properly for the volume of traffic turning."

Tricolor replied to Jaik S.'s discussion Bicycle Camping - 2015
"The unpaved portion of the McClory path is brutal misery with no shade but it would be a good warm up for the regular trip from Chicago to Madison over Memorial Day."

Tricolor replied to David P.'s discussion Some clever tech to alert a car driver to peds, cyclists, motorcyclists, etc.
"Lots of riders and pedestrians, too.  I see a ton of riders that stay to the right in bike lanes but go fast enough to really get hurt if anyone opens a door. And of course there are plenty of pedestrians that walk into the street without…"

Tricolor replied to BritBoy's discussion Bike repair stand in Pittsburg airport
"It's not exactly accessible to Pittsburgh itself. The Montour Trail loops some forty miles around the city then joins the GAP 17 miles or so from downtown. Actually riding from the airport to downtown is a long trip that way and from what I see…"

Tricolor replied to BritBoy's discussion Bike repair stand in Pittsburg airport
"I bet it's to help facilitate people using the Montour Trail from the airport to reach the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trails that run from Pittsburgh to Washington. For anyone flying in with a bike it's perfect for getting from…"

Tricolor replied to h' 1.0's discussion Winter 2015- who's still riding?
"I was warm with two undershirts and a sweater Monday and Tuesday. Today I went with one undershirt and a sweater and hit the right comfort combination."

Tricolor replied to h' 1.0's discussion Winter 2015- who's still riding?
"I wonder how long winter will last this year.  The kestrels that nest in the building next to mine were back this weekend and last night I saw a fairly large spider crawling across the outside screen. "

Tricolor replied to Josh L.'s discussion Homeland Security on CTA?
"I know the CTA and CPD were checking anyone using U-Pass cards (which have a photo on them) to verify students were using their benefits properly, but it sounds like the driver was just suspicious."

Tricolor replied to Vic Sholis's discussion North Branch Trail - Condition?
"There are some tracks in the picture. It's nice to see some looks like it may be set up (or at least left alone) for skiing. I've been going up to Highland Park on weekends since it's closer than big ski trails at Lemont of over the…"

Tricolor replied to Melanie M's discussion How do you track your miles?
"I use Endomondo mainly to track how many days I commute but also for walks and skiing if I remember to use it. I used it in Quebec with my phone's data/service shut off and relying on GPS and it worked, along with a trip through Maryland where…"

Tricolor replied to Jeff Schneider's discussion Lights, Please!
"Most people riding a bike out of necessity are riding very slowly and are not the same as your typical street ninja mixing it up with traffic.  Plus on the north side they usually keep to the sidewalks since it's less of a hassle at night.…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Do you use hand signals while riding?
"You need to be more aware of your surroundings when you are planning to maneuver, then. It's kind of disturbing how may people I see in the city think a bell or signal grants right of way regardless of surroundings and end up in a dangerous…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Do you use hand signals while riding?
"I really only do it when there's traffic around me.  Strangely even downtown in the mornings it's rarely heavy enough that I need to worry about it."

Yes sir, it's that time of year!  We have a friend in common who is set on coming along, so I'm content that I've at least got one companion.  I've done some route cleaning, upgraded my bags, gear, and tent, switched to solar power, made arrangements which should make the ride a bit cheaper, backed up the route to my phone, bought new tires, etc...  I'm going to stay in west Madison an extra day, so I won't be around to shepherd anyone home.  Also, all the bridges along the Glacial Drumlin have been completed, so bring your trail pass or you'll be reminded to get one!
