FYI, thought you might like to see the message I sent today to Sally Jewell and Matt Hyde:

I have an REI “brand moment” story as a “gift” to give back to you for your volunteer support of Y-USA's efforts.

When my husband and I moved to Chicago, we gave up so many of our outdoor activities – mountain skiing, saltwater boating, hiking in the foothills. It has been hard to adjust to urban life that includes the outdoor pursuits that give us balance. Our one major compensation has been getting back into bicycling in a big way, which means we have spent a lot of time at the REI in Lincoln Park this past year.

I bought a new Raleigh road bike in July on REI.com when and had it shipped to the store. Because I have a titanium plate in my neck (over three fused vertebrae), I needed special adjustments. After initially being told that I was probably not going to be able to make my chosen tri-bike work for me (by the person at the register and also my skeptical husband), I was lucky to connect with Christopher Wallace, an amazing bike technician at your Lincoln Park store. He was so encouraging and attentive when I asked him to “get creative with me” to keep biking despite my physical limitations.

Christopher spent all the time I needed working out my adjustments. He really listened to how I feel most comfortable when riding. He changed out my handlebars so I can ride more upright, made multiple tweaks to the seat and offered great advice about how to get the most energy from each rotation while riding upright. The bike has been a dream, and I rode my first metric century in September (the Apple Cider in Michigan). I’m looking forward to moving onto a “real” century next summer, thanks to Christopher’s help.
