Chicagoland Bicycle Map volunteerism

Phew, just finished my work for Active Trans' Chicagoland Bicycle Map. Rode 30 miles of "section 31", plus planning, meeting, and data updates, took like 20hrs. Lots of new bike lanes around, hope some of my changes make it in the 2010 product. The whole map is some 500 times my area; total labor must be huge, and understaffed.…

Just bought a vintage folder.

I just happily bought an old folding bike at a neighborhood sale. It's single speed, 20", dual brakes, generator lights, Italian, vintage. Front tire marked Pirelli, headset marked Guizzardi.
Slight variations were reportedly sold under several names including Cinzia, Hyda-Bike, Barbarellas, Safari, Bianchi.

I love my new fixie.

For the unfamiliar, "fixie" means fixed gear bicycle. Fixies are SINGLE SPEED bikes, which means no gear shifts at all nor attending cables and mechanisms. But fixies take it a step further and don't even have the "freewheel" mechanism which provides "coasting" in other common bikes.
