Folks -
My friend remains hospitalized after suffering a hit-and-run crash while biking home from April's Critical Mass. I'm hoping to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash or may know who hit her.
She and her boyfriend were riding north on the Lakefront Path near 39th Street after the ride. A large group of cyclists quickly passed the two of them. One of the cyclists sped between her and her boyfriend and clipped her, knocking her to the ground head-first. The assailant looked back and saw her fall, and continued on without stopping.
She suffered from a fractured skull, bleeding in her brain, and a severe concussion. An ambulance took her from the lake path to Northwestern Memorial, where she is still being held and will remain for rehabilitation for another two weeks while she recovers her speech, walking and cognitive abilities. Thankfully, she was wearing a helmet-- the injuries could have been much worse without it.
My friend and I value the community that surrounds critical mass in Chicago. She wishes to send many thanks to those who stopped and helped after the crash. People stopped traffic on the bike path, helped lock up the bikes, helped flag down and direct the ambulance, and reminded us of why this community exists-- to spread goodwill, foster connections, and remind the city to have a little more fun. We want people to know what happened. This act of recklessness can never supersede the basic values we share when participating in the ride.

Yes, MikeyMike, the Mass will take place this Friday, March 29th.

"Chicago Critical Mass starts downtown Chicago, rain or shine, the LAST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH at 5:30pm. If you're a wee bit late, don't sweat it (too much) as the Mass often takes a bit of time getting going.

The ride gathers in Daley Plaza around the Big Picasso."

(I think you'd be fine getting to Daley Plaza by 6:00--I don't think it ever leaves before 6.  But part of the fun is chatting & hanging around the plaza beforehand, checking out the other bikes.)

If you have a smartphone, point your browser at

http://massup.us/ccm/u  on Friday, to see real-time chat about the ride.

Any body pick up the Winter/Spring edition of Columbia mag and read the article on the female who was doored over 10 years ago and CCM got her back into riding?

Good stuff.

Isaac - Tom said-

Working bikes has a bicycle based generator but it's a stationary bike. I don't know if they have a moving one. I have seen the stationary one at the Green Festival.

Does anybody have a bike connected to a generator that we might be able to borrow for an event this sunday? We're trying to figure out some basic logistics mixing on-foot marches with people who show up on bike, possibly splitting off for a ride if we have enough of a critical mass. I have a very portable amp, a microphone (and a loop pedal!) that could make it possible to have a really >>moving speech>> and/or rhythmic energy to make our voices heard about the Keystone XL Pipeline and what we're calling #KXLternatives as well. Check out the facebook event and let me (isaac) know in the comments if you know about connecting to a bike generator.... thanks yall!

Thanx!  In case anyone else wants to followup on the multi-year plot, maybe best on my thread at http://www.thechainlink.org/photo/plot-of-25-months-of-chicago-crit...

There I also just published some details, and another 25 month plot of North Side Critical mass.

Cool map, Andrew!  From the looks of it, the Mass will have to ride from Midway Airport to Jefferson Park in order to cover new ground.

Wanna see something amazing?

Plot of the past 25 months of Chicago Critical Mass.

This is fairly preliminary, but I triple-checked details and it seems good enough.  Go, poke around.

I've posted a video from the "Southside Ride". Just me standing on the sideline at a slow point, getting lots of waves and smiles. Under six minutes. http://youtube.com/watch?v=eebTBB7G9CA

And there's a MassUp.us plot at http://massup.us/ccm/r?d=20120831
