I noticed that a number of teachers at my Kids' school are now riding.   But the number is still small.  I also see a number of Divvy stations within two blocks of the school.    And I know many of…Continue

Uh... looks like major disruptions on Lawrence Avenue at that one area where a valid alternative may not exist.  Lawrence is going to be closed Eastbound from the Kennedy. …Continue

I am very sad today as I think I have to put my bicycle out of its misery.  Its a 28 year old Raleigh Aleyseka.   It has shown great service.  I purchased it new and had many years of great riding.  …Continue

I had an interesting discussion this morning with one of the parents at my Kid's school   He was locking up his Kid's bike.   I asked him where he was going to take them biking this summer.  He said…Continue

"That's interesting because the experience at my Kids' CPS School is very different.   I noticed the riding by teachers increasing significantly over the past four years.    Right now we have probably 5…"

"In my experience (which is VERY extensive), the number of teachers who bike is really low. I don't mean that it's below average - just that there are very few who do it. Every CPS location has ample car parking for a reason. When the kids…"

Divvy and the Schools

I noticed that a number of teachers at my Kids' school are now riding.   But the number is still small.  I also see a number of Divvy stations within two blocks of the school.    And I know many of the teachers live within a few blocks of other Divvy Stations.     Teachers are, for the most part, young and healthy and care about society.  (Otherwise they wouldn't be teaching in a Chicago Public School).   Has Divvy ever considered an outreach to the teachers?   Say a 2 or 3 week period early in…See More

Crazy David 84 Furlongs replied to Jeff Schneider's discussion ATA: Compliance with Must Stop for Pedestrians law very low in Chicagoland
"I disagree.  I think this is ignored even more than Speed Limits...  I try, whether in my car or bicycle to always stop.   And a few times it has almost gotten the pedestrian hit when the car behind me cuts around at high…"

"They are no longer supposed to take your license.  The law changed very recently and it is no longer proper for them to do so.  http://wqad.com/2014/08/11/no-more-giving-up-your-drivers-license-if-you-get-a-ticket-in-illinois/ "

"The only real downsides of this offset holder is that they might be a little  more difficult setting up to sit on the rim in the correct plane and the correct toe-in.  They will want to rotate if you squeeze the brake lever rather than…"

"Wow, guys...thanks!  The offset brake pad holders will probably do the trick if my new Shimano BR-CX70 brakes don't make it happen. Really, it's a relief to finally get this done.  Also for some reason I was thinking that center…"

"+1 & bookmarked. These are brilliant.   An elegant solution to this problem that I've never seen before.  Thanks KevinM! "

"I would be less worried about post breakage than just plain old power/feel-robbing flex.   Canti brakes already often suffer from sponginess from the fact that the posts splay outwards as the chainstays/fork blades twist against the force of…"

"If post breakage was a problem using these extenders, I'd expect to see reports of carnage they caused on the web. I wasn't able to find anything with a few Google searches. Is post breakage a known problem?"

notoriousDUG replied to Crazy David 84 Furlongs's discussion Is it Time to Put a Bullet in the Old Horse
"It's called leverage... The extenders move the brake down and are putting pressure from the longer lever arm they create into the posts in a direction that was never intended. They will be subjected to a greater force trying to rip them off…"
