Bar Fly

SLi-D Accessory Mount ($29.95 MSRP)

Any experienced mountain biker will tell you that positioning your GPS bike computer forward of the handlebars is a bad idea. Typically, the moment you crash, you can expect at the very least a broken GPS mount (if not a busted computer).

Sure, your GPS probably came with a plastic platform that holds the GPS unit to the top of your stem with a couple of rubber bands. While it may indeed work, it’s arguably not a particularly elegant solution. It also lets the GPS slide and swivel around a bit when you try to press buttons and such.

Based on our experience, the Bar Fly SLi-D is a rock-solid, well-designed, easy-to-install mount that places your Garmin or similar “quarter turn-mounted” GPS comparatively out of harm’s way above the stem.

So far, we’ve got about six solid hours of trail time with it, including jumps, drops, rock gardens, logs, and whatever else we could find to test the Sli-D’s strength (outside of crashing). Even holding up a big and heavy Garmin Edge 1000, it hasn’t budged a bit. And once locked in place, the Garmin doesn’t shake or move or anything.

Bar Fly says the Sli-D is made from a composite material they’ve tested to be 20 times stronger than aluminum. It’s a claim they back up with a lifetime replacement policy. It’s also very light.

If you like versatility, it’s worth note the Sli-D holds more that just your GPS. With the requisite attachments (available from Bar Fly), you have the option to mount a GoPro camera or a headlight.

Even if you’re not in the market for a GPS mount, Bar Fly makes a lot of other cool accessories, so they are definitely worth a look.
