Bus Bicycle Accident

Why do the news agencies always make it sound like the cyclist's fault in these reports, even when they only have one side of the story? According to this little article: "Preliminary reports from the CTA stated the bicyclist struck the rear of the bus, according to a CTA spokeswoman."   I can't imagine someone riding their bike and actually "striking" the bus with their bicycle, but I could see someone cycling along the side of the road, the bus trying to pass them and then the bus quickly cutting over to the curb, and the bus striking the cyclist.

My heart goes out to the cyclist and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Great job by the CTA spokesperson there...

How can a man be run over after striking the back of the bus? 

Smells like somebody is trying to shift the blame...

I might be giving the writer/editor/Tribune too much credit or peering through vaguely rose-colored spectacles, but I took "The bus ran over the man, who suffered fractures to his hips and arms, Langford (Fire Media spokesman) said" followed by "Preliminary reports from the CTA stated the bicyclist struck the rear of the bus, according to a CTA spokeswoman" as an attempt to make the point that the two statements do not compute.
