Garage Burglaries

District 19 (Town Hall)

About the Crime:

Burglaries have occurred in District 19 where offender(s) either forced entry or used

unlocked doors to gain access to garages and steal bicycles.

• 2400 block of W. Belle Plaine between July 3rd-July 5th, 2015 at unknown time.

• 4100 block of N. Lincoln between July 13-14, 2015 at unknown time.

• 4300 block of N. Seeley on July 14th between 2:00 am and 2:30 am.

• 2000 block of N. Cullom on July 14th between 2:00 am and 2:30 am.

About the Offenders:

• From the incident on Lincoln, the offender is described as a white male, 20-30

years of age, approximately 5'08, 150-165 lbs.

• From the incident on Seeley, the offenders were described as two males

wearing dark clothing, slim builds. One appeared to be a white male with a

shaggy hairstyle. The other offender had very short hair.

What you can do:

• Report any suspicious people or activity in the area

• Be aware of the situation and alert neighbors in the area about these crimes

• Pay special attention to any subjects loitering in the area

• Ensure that doors and windows are secured and check any suspicious noises

• Keep records of serial numbers of electronic items

Thanks for the warning, Gene.  In addition, don't rely just on a locked garage (or basement or bike room) to keep your bike; lock your bike to something metal and secure inside the garage, like a pipe or post or lockdown ring sunk into a cement floor.  An awful number of unlocked bikes just seem to get rolled out of secure enclosures when a door is momentarily left open.

There's been a sudden surge of reports of cut U-lock thefts in the last week or two.
