We have done a lot of camping with our bikes, but not BY bike...

For the past 3 summers, we've gone on a marathon 4 week camping trip in July.  All five of us tent camp in a 10x10 ft tent.  It sounds crazy, but it really is fun.  We always bring our bicycles, but on a rack on the back of the minivan.

I am hoping to try riding to the Dunes for some camping this coming summer.  The big limiter is my daughter Katie (the 12 yr old, NOT the 8 yr old!!!).  She loves to ride her bike, but at 6 miles an hour so she can smell the flowers.  This drives me bonkers on long rides!!!!

All of us have racks on our bikes save Genevieve.  I think we can pull this off with some careful planning.

Has anyone done a family bike camping trip? Momentum Magazine just had an article about a mother and her two kids camping trip by bike.

Thanks for listening, Todd . . .
Also be aware that when I was recruiting for help a few months ago to try to restore some semblance of family friendliness to the Daley Center mass, I heard from Lisa Philips (and maybe Gin?) that there was already something of a plan to start such a ride.

I think a kidical mass could be lots of fun. I have no idea as to whether it is better to make a thread here, just post comments, or create a group of its own. I will keep my eye out for more posts here or in the group you set up.

I started a group called http://www.thechainlink.org/group/kidicalmass to develop/promote mass rides for kids.

Howard suggested I kill that group and make a thread in this group. From the few other groups I'm active in, it seems most action occurs on comment walls of groups and threads are often neglected.

What do you all think? Is Kidical Mass worth pursuing and if so should it have a group? Or is a thread here sufficient? Or just here on the wall of comments?

So the question becomes one of how to raise interest...? I have never been to Portland but I always feel like I should visit if only to check out its way of life as realted to bikes.

Chicago is way behind Portland in both bike frame fabrication and street infrastructure. Until interest levels raise in both of these key areas, I think family cycling will only be for the truly devoted, here in Chicago...
