The Chainlink

Lets come up with some other trips and get a good camping season in!

Any ideas for next month?

Past post:

I figure, let's get planning...the new year is almost here.

I'd like to setup an easy one for the first time. This way, you can still go even if you're not interested in riding the whole way there.

Illinois State Beach Park

Second weekend of April 2015, 9th - 14th. The average temp for 2014 was 59 degrees.
The great thing about ISBP is you can ride the Metra to Zion for $7.25 each way, or a weekend pass for $7. After that the site is only about two miles. Theres a grocery store about a mile away. Kenosha is about 26m round trip. It's a good place to camp out.

The unpaved portion of the McClory path is brutal misery with no shade but it would be a good warm up for the regular trip from Chicago to Madison over Memorial Day.

That stretch by North Chicago? It always seems so endless...

I'm ready for camping season. Got my gears and trailer's all set!

Although, I'd only bring the trailer if the GF is coming along on bike. Otherwise she'd drive and I ride bike with my gears in tow in panniers

My wife and I camped here on the way back from a 4 day ride in WI last summer.  It was okay.  Unfortunately Chicago sucks for having anywhere pretty to camp/ride nearby.

Just noticed the note about this in the newsletter.

Bike Camping 2015

Considering that I just bottled my first home brew, and it needs about a month to ferment and another to bottle condition, I'll bring along a few bottles to camp. Time to start the next brew!

50 Days until the first Camping trip!

I think going on Sheridan is preferable to the McClory path.  Sheridan has cars but it's a regular part of a lot of group rides in the area and you're on concrete/asphalt instead of gravel.

Just an FYI:

Alcohol Ban

Alcohol WILL NOT be permitted on sites 100-123, 200-215, 290-296, 300H & 301, 392H & 391 within the campground. ALCOHOL IS NOT ALLOWED ON THE BEACH, TRAILS, PICNIC AREAS AND/OR SHELTERS. EXCEPTION - Illinois Beach Resort.

That might be pushing it, given the uncertainties of spring weather. Right now, this winter, Milwaukee and Chicago have barely made it above zero.

FYI - I will not be attending.  Y'all have a decent map, though, and you're plenty familiar, so have fun!

Spring weather is always uncertain, but so are most other weather patterns. Last April, the highest temp was 80(13th) and the lowest was 26(16th). With an average of 59.4 degrees for the past five years, I'm comfortable.

If cool weather camping isn't for you, I think all of us would love another event setup anytime this year.

Now that it's getting warmer and there are two weeks to go, this needs to be back on the front page. Is anyone else planning a trip up to Illinois Beach? If it's still on I'll be heading up Saturday afternoon from the Loyola area if anyone wants to go in a small group.
