The Chainlink

I found out yesterday that the Cycle Center will no longer allow non-members to park their bikes there. The explanation was that with all the construction going on, they were having issues and the city was making it worse. This starts on May 1. I for one, am totally bummed.

Hi Tony,

The mechanic services will remain open and available to non-members.

Thanks!

Thanks for clarifying all this!

Given where I live and work, the storage and shower facilities are not something I need, but it has been super handy on several occasions to have a bike shop there for picking up a tube or for service. Am I reading correctly that during the park destruction/construction, non-members will no longer have access to the bike shop?

Hi Zoetrope,

As you stated, the number of spaces available depends on how many members choose to attend the concerts and leave their bicycles parked until after the show.

The lineups for the Downtown Sound, Loops & Variations, Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz are all looking very solid http://bit.ly/ZTgw1e

Any idea how many spaces there will be for the shows, or will it depend on how many spaces are filled up with paying customers, etc? The outdoor parking for bicycles is a hornswagglin mess.

Thanks for dropping in to clarify.

Awe, you kinda made us all sound like an angry mob. Really there were one or two people that had some issues.

Also interesting in that article, Walter said that he has lost memberships as a result of the park construction. This seems odd to me, both shortcuts through Lakeshore East are still fine, plus it's worth noting that if you don't want to cut through lake shore east, you can still come up Monroe and cut through Millenium Park via the ramp that goes down to Columbus just North on Monroe. The article implies that riding bikes in MP isn't allowed, is that true? I do it almost everyday, past the MP overseers, no one has ever said anything (?).

Folks,

Here's a Streetsblog post with full info about the changes at the bike station, straight from the horse's mouth. Thanks for the tip on this story. http://chi.streetsblog.org/2013/04/26/not-lovin-it-chainlinkers-pan...

Has there been any discussion about an intermediate membership?  I understand needing to charge but I have showers and lockers at work for free.  A $5-$10 per month parking only membership seems like a fair compromise.

I asked that exact question and the answer was no. I would suggest you speak directly to them though to make sure nothing has changed since last week.

Will G: bike riding is not permitted in Millennium Park. I was hanging out there Monday and saw a guard yell at a bike rider, who yelled back at the guard.

Therefore, if you're coming up the Lakefront Trail from the south, there's currently no direct route that doesn't involve walking your bike through the park, or carrying it up the stairs from Lower Randolph.

@ Will G... You are correct, those are the only routes to access the bike center presently when coming off the LFP from the south.  Both wholly inconvenient and earlier talks with the management of Milllennium Park pre-construction attempting to suggest a protected lane or easier ingress were futile.
