The Chainlink

So, I bike to work every day on the LFP from Hyde Park to Fullerton or thereabouts. I go right by McCormick Place every day and now this NATO thing has me paranoid that I'm going to have to plan to ride out of my way for several days in order to get to work. I figure worse case scenario I get off the path at 31st and ride up King Drive until I can get back on the path up by the Museum Campus. That's potentially an okay work around but I'm sure it'll add quite a few extra minutes to the ol' morning commute. Driving my car is likely to be a headache too, because I'd either get held up going by McCormick or I'd have to get to work by going over onto the Dan Ryan to bypass Lakeshore Drive south. Anyway, I sent an email to the city website set up to answer questions about the NATO summit and they essentially had no useful info on whether access to the path would be restricted or whether they would be issues with protesters blocking it, etc. I was told to sign up for some city website that sends out alerts on closures and such. Does anyone have any other info on possible closures or restrictions?

Somewhat off-topic:

Anyone noticed that Chicago police officers appear to use their bikes as movable barriers during protests. I've seen multiple photos like that in the last few days.

Here is an article on CPD's use of bikes as crowd control:

Park District just tweeted that LFT would be closed Saturday, May 19 through 6 p.m. on Monday, May 21 from Balbo to Oakwood/39th.

Thanks,

Balbo to Oakwood/39th?  Slightly larger area than many of us expected.  Thanks for the update.

A short photographic preview. If I disappear suddenly after posting these, have the CL lawyers make inquiries (that means you, KC).

oooh, you are making me want to ride down tomorrow or Friday just to scope this out!

Here's some good photos of the police using bikes as moving barricades.  Its a really great way to help control the crowds and keep the protests safe for all.

Are you in your "undisclosed location" yet? Are you undergoing "enhanced interrogation" methods still? Are you comfortable being "off the street" until May 22nd at approximately 12:00 pm?

I've put together a summary of all transportation disruptions in Chicago. I've categorized the disruptions, paraphrased them, and provided links to more and better information. It includes rails, buses, streets, the Lakefront Trail.

Summary of transportation and transit changes because of NATO summit

I'm on my submersible cargo bike far below the surface of Lake Michigan (Surly makes it--it's called the Diver Dan.) Here are some photo updates taken with the periscope handlebar camera optional feature:

The Alternative Transportation Alliance website has information on this.  For planning purposes just assume that the LFP is closed for the duration.  Burnham Harbor was emptied and moved to 31st Street and even though the Official Security plan for the event lists "recreational use" as a possible exception -- don't believe it.  Take King Drive and stop worrying.

Second that. I rode to W Loop and back today and this city reminds me of a college town on summer break (although there was a crazy amount of westbound car traffic on 18th in Pilsen-- maybe rerouted from somewhere else . . .)

So far this has been a kind of weird almost surreal experience.
