Man Sets Wire Booby Traps for Cyclists, Gets 20 Hours Community Service

I  am  one of the few who finds much more meaning  in civil  justice that criminal justice. I hope the cyclist is  suing  the man  and that she draws blood just  as he did. Still, I find it  hard to  root  for  jail time for  people even people like this guy. I  have  an instinctive aversion to lynch mob psychology.  I would have liked to  see a lot more  hours of community service.  I doubt the law would allow such a remedy but  would  have  loved to  see a loss of this man's drivers license during  his probation.  Perhaps that would force him to use a bicycle and actually learn something.

I'd prefer 1000 hours of community service in a meaningful way. As well as some training that involves teaching some empathy for vulnerable users of trails. I agree - he should be forced to use a bicycle or walk as transport for a year. My issue is that compared to other sentences, crimes against cyclists are excused away, victim blamed, and seem to have no implications. That is worrisome.

I've actually had this happen to me on the lakefront trail about 3-4 years ago. I was going towards McCormick coming from Hyde Park around 9pm and somebody had tied a nylon (I think) wire between the trees on both sides of the trail. Luckily it snapped across my chest...
