Anyone put their bike on a VIA Rail train in Canada?

I want to put my bike on a route in Canada that does not offer roll-on service, so this means getting a VIA Rail box. Amtrak's boxes are 69" x 41" x 8.75". But I've written VIA Rail customer service, and— I kid you not— two different agents told me they were incapable of telling me their box's dimensions. (Because getting out a tape measure would be so hard!)

I just want to know if I'll have to take both wheels off or, as with Amtrak's large box, can roll my hybrid right in with handlebars turned and pedals off.

I would be so grateful if someone could tell me the size of a VIA Rail box. (Or if you know someone up in Canada who would know.) Can't even find a picture through Google Images :-(.

  • A box must be used if the journey includes a transfer.
  • Nothing other than the bicycle may go in the box. The owner is required to turn the handlebars and remove the pedals. VIA Rail does not provide tools to dismantle or assemble bicycles.
  • VIA Rail assumes no liability in case of damage if the bicycle is not placed on a bicycle rack or in a box, or if other items are also placed in the same box.

Thanks, Mike. Appreciate the help. Still looking to find the exact size, though. I think I'll hit up a Canadian cyclists' forum.
