A good op-ed from the NYT.

Cars Are Ruining Our Cities

America can't seem to let go of the insane idea that if you build more roads, there will be less congestion.  Water will find its level, and drivers are just like water.  We waste billions on expanding highways through cities to accomplish absolutely nothing.  Not to mention the roads to exurban nowhere.  And now Ford is only going to sell trucks and SUVs in the U.S., except for two measly sedans.  Aargh!

**One measly sedan, One overrated sports car.

Side note: With the warmer weather come the inexperienced riders. As much as I like to scoff and grumble, I'm going to try being nice and teaching. Drivers also are less inclined to pay attention like they do every season change(i.e. GF almost got hit by a driver cutting right yesterday).

Yep, a bit of patience and kind teaching can go a long way towards making things better.

Actually, Ford will be selling new crossovers, which are basically higher sitting station wagons. The term Sports Utility Vehicle is a rather poor description of the various AWD vehicles available these days. I wouldn't call the BMW X1, X2, and Volvo XC40 SUVs. Now, a Ford Expedition is an SUV.

A great big SUV.  And they and Navigators and monster pickup trucks are what Ford is pushing, because that's where the most profits lie.  Ford has one smaller car to its name, the Focus, which is being discontinued even though sales are up.

I frequently stand on the corner waiting for the bus and watch the rush-hour traffic heading towards downtown.  What I see is a whole lot of big SUVs and trucks with one person in them.  America has three overwhelming obsessions:  oversized vehicles, guns, and anything having to do with the Kardashian family.  None of them are good.

No, the Fiesta, Fusion, and Taurus are being discontinued. The Focus will live on as the Focus Active, a not-quite-hatchback, not-quite-crossover vehicle:

That's a bummer. I really like the Ford Fusion (when renting a car or Zipcarring).

I know I'm not the only one who is REALLY tired of this big dumb obsession with behemoth SUVs.

I agree to a point. In the suburbs and hinterlands, OK. However, folks living in the city that drive around solo in these beasts? I have a midsize SUV, and I can barely fit it in some parking spaces.

Just like cigarette smoking ads, they should ban these non stop automobile commercials.
