Every member of the Society (CBES) should aspire to have a beer at every brewery or brewpub located in a day or two bicycle ride distance from Chicago (and, of course, within the city limits).
Naturally, preferable way of getting to is by bike, as for riding back . . . whatever is available, train, bus, horse and buggy, depending on amount of beverages consumed at the destination.

I'll be heading North @bobweiser via Sheridan Rd tmrw. I can pick you up in Evanston. How far do you wanna go?
i'd like to get some miles in this sun. afternoon. leaving from evanston around noon. anybody else?
James we'll be aiming for 15-18 (on roads and paved trails) on the Third Step Ride on Sat. 3/25, come join us?
Thanks for the info. Your rides sound fun and relaxing. I do enjoy these kinds of outings from time to time. I look forward to riding with you all someday. Cheers!
Also, kit not required but understood. Please bring a bike lock and maybe a bungee cord (in case of Metra ride).
If you ride 19 - 24 then you'll be on your second beer by the time everyone catches up!
Here's what you can expect:
- more steel bikes than carbon
- more bikes with fenders/racks/saddlebags than not
- more people with regular clothes vs kit or spandex
- 12-14 rolling average speed
- occasional hi jinks or shenanigans
Surface wise I really like mixed surface routes. Some people prefer to stick to paved. We mix it up between road and trail as well. So each ride will have its own flavor.
Hope you can make it out!
You'll be too fast. While these rides are by no means slow rides, but there are no pace-line either. We ride, we chat, we rest when required.
Be that as it may, if you have the route and you want to get there before (faster than) anyone else, you're more than welcome to go on ahead.
Hey beer & gear lovers! I'm new to the group and looking forward to my first ride with ya'all. What kind of ride can one expect? Pace, paved vs gravel that sort of thing. I'm not slow but I'm not cat 1 either. I like to clip along between 19-24 mph. Am I going to slow you down?
Gotta be online @ noon!
I believe its paved. Although I remember one ride we had to find an alternate route since it was underwater (I believe we were in La Grange).
