We hope the cyclist is ok and recovers fully. This is a very disturbing account of what happened.

Update from Chicago Streetsblog:

A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after a motorist opened a car door in his path while he was biking in Portage Park, throwing the man into traffic, where the bike rider was then struck and dragged by an SUV driver.

At about 1:40 p.m. this afternoon, the man, whose name has not been released, was biking on the 5900 block of Irving Park Road, near Marmora Avenue and the Patio Theater, according to Office Kevin Quaid from Police News Affairs. According to a report from DNAinfo, witnesses said the man was riding east.

When a motorist in a parked car opened the door without looking, the man struck the door and flew off his bike into traffic, Quaid said. Another driver in an SUV then struck the man and dragged him. Witnesses said it was a small red SUV and than the bike rider was knocked out of his shoes, DNA reported. A posted by Christopher Smith shows the cyclist was on a black fixed gear or single-speed bike with at least one hand brake.

Update with Streetsblog article and more details.

Sad. News reports said the driver 'flung' the door open. Another careless, self-absorbed 'door flinger'!

Was the driver ticketed for opening the door into traffic?

From Municipal Codes of Chicago (MCC):

9-80-035  Opening and closing vehicle doors.
No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so, and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic, nor shall any person leave a door open on the side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers.

Yes

Do we know this bicyclist's name?  My thoughts and prayers are with him.  Several years ago, I was doored on Highland Blvd. in Milwaukee.  The driver of the parked car threw his door open so fast that I couldn't react.  I couldn't stop in time, nor did I care to take the risk of being hit by a speeding car.  This driver complained about my doing damage to his car door and that I was riding too fast.  We both had to pay out of our own pockets for our own damage.  It cost me $150 at Cory the Bike Fixer's to replace my fork and Low Riders with a Jamis OEM fork.  I myself had a minor knee injury.
