Memorial Day Tour - Chicago to Madison 2015
4 Replies

Over the years Matt M's organized a number of trips from Chicago over to Madison. This year; tragedy! Matt can't manage it. I've done the last two trips and am familiar with the route and the…Continue

Off to Washington - Shutdown be Damned!

I'm headed to Pittsburgh on Sunday to bike down to Washington.  Sadly the second half of the trip is through the C&O Canal National Park, and it's closed. The owners of various B&Bs where I'm…Continue

The search function still isn't returning anything but I've got a new frame that I'm cleaning up (removing some paint overspray on the fork crown and brake nubs) and was considering what to do about…Continue

Tricolor replied to Carter O'Brien's discussion Active Trans survey on proposed river trail connection between Belmont & Diversey
"I've been thinking there should be a light rail line along there headed to town for commuters, too. If everyone expected to move in along the river tried to drive it'd be a real mess. Before it's all done is the time to put in transit."

Tricolor replied to Tooscrapps's discussion Navy Pier Flyover Closure Notice: 6/24-6/27
"Since Dearborn's northbound bike lane runs on the left side of the street above Kinze it's a bit unnerving. Then it disappears and you have to move over to the right across two lanes, including a left turn lane. Dearborn's quiet…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"It's one of the few places you can get up much speed anyway. Kind of like how Evanston patrols Chicago Ave southbound so heavily with a 25 mph speed limit between Dempster and South."

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"It depends a lot on the time of day. I usually drive Saturday mornings where 50 would be pretty slow. I was in a taxi two hours hour after New Year's eve 2001. Took the blue line in from O'Hare to downtown and didn't want to transfer…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"Just because people are comfortable driving at seventy on Lake Shore Drive doesn't mean it's built to contain a crash at that speed."

"That's any e bike, though I swear some of those are hitting 20 mph into a headwind with almost no peddling."

"I haven't seen any so far this week. But then my route is the lake front trail and it's kind of foggy lately."

Tricolor replied to Brian S's discussion When will the Trail Separation project be completed?

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"This depends on the scooter's top speed and if they're as wobbly as tourists on Divvys. Most electric scooters I've seen on the lake front aren't very fast though there are the occasional tree branches and pavement joins I…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Another car crashes after veering off LSD and through the bike path
"I saw it this morning. The car almost ended up in the waterway to Diversey Harbor. And it's next to a little shrine that went up a few weeks ago after a crash took out one of the art deco bridge markers. A taller, more robust barrier along the…"

Tricolor replied to Brian S's discussion When will the Trail Separation project be completed?
"The new bike path also shouldn't be longer than the original path. The lengths to which the Park district is going just to force traffic to use the Montrose underpass is getting ridiculous but at least the underpass isn't flooding like it…"

Tricolor replied to Brian S's discussion When will the Trail Separation project be completed?
"True, the new bike trails are narrower, with mud bogs or sand for shoulders."

Yes sir, it's that time of year!  We have a friend in common who is set on coming along, so I'm content that I've at least got one companion.  I've done some route cleaning, upgraded my bags, gear, and tent, switched to solar power, made arrangements which should make the ride a bit cheaper, backed up the route to my phone, bought new tires, etc...  I'm going to stay in west Madison an extra day, so I won't be around to shepherd anyone home.  Also, all the bridges along the Glacial Drumlin have been completed, so bring your trail pass or you'll be reminded to get one!
