Memorial Day Tour - Chicago to Madison 2015
4 Replies

Over the years Matt M's organized a number of trips from Chicago over to Madison. This year; tragedy! Matt can't manage it. I've done the last two trips and am familiar with the route and the…Continue

I'm headed to Pittsburgh on Sunday to bike down to Washington.  Sadly the second half of the trip is through the C&O Canal National Park, and it's closed. The owners of various B&Bs where I'm…Continue

The search function still isn't returning anything but I've got a new frame that I'm cleaning up (removing some paint overspray on the fork crown and brake nubs) and was considering what to do about…Continue

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"I haven't seen any so far this week. But then my route is the lake front trail and it's kind of foggy lately."

"All those barrels in the walking path don't help. You just have to slow down in the afternoons."

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Scooters: What Does This Mean for People That Ride Bikes?
"This depends on the scooter's top speed and if they're as wobbly as tourists on Divvys. Most electric scooters I've seen on the lake front aren't very fast though there are the occasional tree branches and pavement joins I…"

Tricolor replied to Yasmeen's discussion Another car crashes after veering off LSD and through the bike path
"I saw it this morning. The car almost ended up in the waterway to Diversey Harbor. And it's next to a little shrine that went up a few weeks ago after a crash took out one of the art deco bridge markers. A taller, more robust barrier along the…"

Tricolor replied to Brian S's discussion When will the Trail Separation project be completed?
"The new bike path also shouldn't be longer than the original path. The lengths to which the Park district is going just to force traffic to use the Montrose underpass is getting ridiculous but at least the underpass isn't flooding like it…"

Tricolor replied to Brian S's discussion When will the Trail Separation project be completed?
"True, the new bike trails are narrower, with mud bogs or sand for shoulders."

Tricolor replied to Noah Kleinschmidt's discussion Hoping to bike from Chi or Milwaukee to Mpls, wanna join?
"Chicago to Madison is a decent long weekend trip. three days, two nights and a bus back to Chicago since they take bikes. Matt had a really good route worked out that we used for a few years over Memorial Day. Allegheny Passage/C&O is a must-do…"

Tricolor replied to Steve Johnson's discussion Nationwide trail
"Advantages are it's exclusively for bikes, well balasted surface and it's moderately graded. Needed infrastructure like bridges and tunnels are either in place or easy to re-establish. Terrain depends on where you are. Illinois is pretty…"

Tricolor replied to Ernesto Lube's discussion Final phase of Navy Pier Flyover
"I doubt any direction markers for the bridge will apply during tourist season, but at least they still seem to plan going through with it. From the way things look I thought they were going to give up and have the flyover join the current sidewalk…"

Tricolor replied to John Greenfield's discussion Class, Race, and Sharing Space on the Lakefront Trail
"That's always a pet peeve of mine especially since it requires ignoring a stop sign and turning into an oncoming lane because of the speed they're carrying. And that's before mentioning any vehicle traffic."

Tricolor replied to Ernesto Lube's discussion City riding
"The islands that have been built along Dearborn encourage people and bikes to cross bike lanes to get ten feet farther across the street. Not the best idea."

Tricolor replied to Ernesto Lube's discussion Lake Front crash from last night
"Areas like where Belmont harbor that force the two trails to merge create some nasty weave zones that will get more dangerous when more people start to use the trail after work. Looks like the Navy Pier Flyover won't make it over the river and…"

Yes sir, it's that time of year!  We have a friend in common who is set on coming along, so I'm content that I've at least got one companion.  I've done some route cleaning, upgraded my bags, gear, and tent, switched to solar power, made arrangements which should make the ride a bit cheaper, backed up the route to my phone, bought new tires, etc...  I'm going to stay in west Madison an extra day, so I won't be around to shepherd anyone home.  Also, all the bridges along the Glacial Drumlin have been completed, so bring your trail pass or you'll be reminded to get one!
