Thanks for looking but I'm reconsidering and will see about fixing this one up a bit and keeping it in the stable. Great vintage 'barn find' bike project. Pedals missing, kickback 2 speed hub not…Continue

While listening to 99% Invisible on the ride in today, I had to dodge a door and thought, I wonder how long until US drivers could relearn how to open their car doors..."For decades now in the…Continue

JimM. replied to bobweiser's discussion How far you've ridden in 2018
"So 5,783mi after my last commute home this evening. 2018 turned out AOK for commuting. Glad these past couple of weeks in December were pretty mild."

JimM. replied to bobweiser's discussion How far you've ridden in 2018
"As of Dec 21, I've got 5,767 outside miles. I'll add a few more miles heading home this evening but that'll probably be my total for the year unless I can sneak in some rides over the holidays. Set a goal of 5,750 and pretty much…"

"Here's my trip over in last evening... sorry about portrait video, handlebar phone mount + basket = no landscape video and as you can see at the end, having both hands on the handlebars is the best way to avoid launching yourself into the…"

JimM. replied to John Dow's discussion hitch or rack?
"Hitch rack here. We have a 4-bike hanging Yakima from a looooooong time ago. Always a workhorse until this summer. Was in Arkansas and a weld broke. Dumped bikes on the road, luckily, when we weren't going fast and traffic was minimal. Too much…"

"Thanks for the details especially about the yelling. I try to avoid getting yelled at so I'll probably skip the detour. I've never ridden the bus route except to ride the bus. I expect the bus route isn't bicycle friendly."

JimM. replied to djm's discussion LFP Closure
"Thanks for posting your detour and I'm just reposting your image inline instead of as a link. And I'm also trying to figure out how you did this route. Did you use the bus route along the tracks that shuttles between parking garages up by…"

"Blue line is southbound, orange line is northbound if you want to stay with the direction of traffic with the tunnels. Sorry about my squiggly lines. And you can avoid E. 18th Drive by using the parking lots along the way just east of the roads…"

JimM. replied to Kate Katz's discussion When is a cross-wind too strong to bike?
"I use Weather Underground for pretty much real-time wind conditions by the lake. Keep it open in a browser on a second screen at work when I start thinking of making the commute home. "

JimM. replied to Kate Katz's discussion When is a cross-wind too strong to bike?
"Glad you made it home! And yep it was a wild ride at times heading home today for me too. Mostly had a tailwind heading north but those intersections can be gusty. Someday I might switch to a road bike but my commuter keeps me riding more…"

JimM. replied to Kate Katz's discussion When is a cross-wind too strong to bike?
"I commute back and forth from Evanston to 31st and State and I decided to ride today. When it's windy I stay off the Lakefront Bike Path and stick to Clark, or I'll take Wells to Lincoln to California or other route where the buildings can…"

"I expected more of a headwind this morning and was pleasantly surprised it was pretty calm out for the commute. Fingers-crossed your magical tailwind finds me when I'm heading back north this afternoon! "

Interest in the "Did you ride today" discussion board and the chicago cycling community in general.
About me:
I am a web developer and designer at Illinois Institute of Technology and I started bike commuting from Evanston to 31st and State a couple summers ago. Almost 40 miles/day is getting me acquainted with everything that can (and will) need repair on a bike. I used to ride a 6 or 7 year old Bianchi Parco Milano that I converted to single speed. Now, I'm on a single speed Schwinn Typhoon with an Xtracycle back end so I can carry the kiddos around. Having a great time.
My other websites (twitter, facebook, pinterest, Google+, blogs, etc.):

My first bike:
1970's Schwinn Stingray with banana seat. The grass on the path we rode around my parents house was only recently able to grow back... My odometer had almost 900 miles on it from riding around and around and around the house.
