I like the wind chill article. But wind chill numbers are useful for technical reasons. Yesterday was pleasant to ride along the lakefront, but on Sunday with gusts up to 25 knots it was torture, even walking. Part of it was wind strength, but part of it was the much more rapid chilling of exposed skin or body parts not perfectly shielded from wind. Pick a wind chill number below which you prefer not to ride. It helps. In my iceboating life, we have all agreed not to race when it is below 10 degrees. Wind chill is technically not such an important factor as we are always going between 30 and 80 mph - so absolutely no exposed skin, etc. But seldom are cyclists prepared for long exposures to cold, cold wind the way iceboaters are. Wind chill is not an inconvenience as suggested in the article. (The author likely does not make technical weather-related challenges regularly.) The windchill number is a factor (however it is derived) that is useful in making a sensible decision, or in knowing exactly what to wear in your outdoor activities.

The Marauders ride went fine. We spent most of the eavening marauding the Billy Goat. We eventualy made our way to Navy Pier, at which point the temp. dropped signifagantly. We retreated to Bobbys to warm up and further fortify ourselvs for the ride home. No body crashed, none were lost, and nothing got burned. Well almost nothing.

Been pretty cold, wait till we get -30f wind chills! Thankfully I now have the studded tires on. They don't help with the snow, but man what a good workout. Definitely warmer than slicks.

I didn't ride to work because my gloves aren't really up to snuff--need to get either good liners or lobsters this week. But I'm about to venture the shorter commute from my house to West Town. Re toes, I swear by ziplock freezer bags between the socks and boots.
