Crossing the Canal

Any thoughts on the best route to cross the canal?  I use Touhy on a daily basis and it is hardly friendly to bikes.   None of the crossing further north get any better.   Sometimes I will go across at Dempster and then use Lake in Evanston to go further east.

What's your experience?
