THE CAUSE

The The Worthwhile Mile is a fundraising adventure in support of the Walter Spohn Trust. The WST is a nonprofit organization that funds research and education in Clinical Anaplastology, a specialized field of healthcare that provides custom prosthetic rehabilitation for patients who've suffered disfigurement of the face or body due to trauma, cancer, or congenital conditions. The field is greatly underfunded and the WST is trying to change that with its annual Giving Programs. This ride is an important fundraiser for the WST - a great time for a great cause!

Of course there are a lot of places many people would like along the lakeshore, but I realized that two things which have reached international importance are right out my back door and I do it every year. Every year around the end of Sept I ride up to Yankee Springs Campground and spend the weekend where I ride through the forest along the route of the Barry Roubaix gravel race and spend the following day riding (or driving/riding, depending on the weather) to Grand Rapids for the Art Prize competition.
I thought I would throw that out there and invite anybody who wishes to tag along. It would be the last weekend of September 2015.

I'm certain it's about to get quiet around here for the next few months, but here's something to get us through the winter: It looks like Cook County Forest Preserve is on track to open camp sites in Northbrook, Palatine, Willow Springs, Tinley Park, and South Holland.

Hello all,

I just stumbled on this group while looking around for other Chicago touring/camping bike people. Looks like a good place to be!

My wife Allison and I just got back from an 8 day ride around the bottom half of the lake and had a great time. If anyone needs route information for that, please feel free to let us know.

See you all out on the road!

After a fair amount of research on touring bikes, I've narrowed down a couple options that would fit a variety of requirements I have, the primary ones being 59cm+ frames (ideally larger), mid-level components or higher (shooting to stay close to $1k), and an emphasis on durability/versatility (chromoly/steel, cantilever brakes instead of disc, front rack compatible).
Suggestions or recommendations between these two options?

Hello! Thanks to great advice from Chainlinkers myself and a group of friends are heading up to IL State Beach for an overnight trip Saturday. Only problem is... I did not get a reservation. By the time I called for one, all the reservations were taken.

They told me the walk-in and non-reservable spots don't usually fill up until 5-6pm, then there is also the chance of no-shows.

Has anyone else chanced it before? Hoping you had good luck?

Camping is rustic, on beach. Also, planning trip to either: Devils Lake, Baraboo, WI, Peninsula State Park, Door Co, WI, or back up to MI, July 28-Aug.Both trips we will drive & bring bikes in car.
