The Chainlink

Please respond with ideas of how we can promote our rides.  Even better if you can tell us what you have done or will do to help promote rides.

Here's a list of things that have been done so far:

Momentum magazine article
DailyCandy listing
TimeOut Chicago Kids listing
KidicalMass.org listing
Chainlink bike calendar
Bike Chicago calendar
Active transportation calendar
Derailleur (for Chicago Critical Mass)
notes posted to CCM & chainlink forums
fliers at CCM and posted in park field houses, libraries, bike shops and on bike racks

I would love to get stories about our Kidical Mass rides into the media (print, TV, radio, etc.), but I have no experience with this.  Any suggestions for what media would be easy to get into or would be most effective for us?  Any suggestions for how one goes about it?

Also, what other online things might help, FaceBook?  MySpace?, others?

Todd Gee has offered web space for Kidical Mass but I haven't yet taken the time to do anything on it.  However, I think it could be useful.  I would like to establish a flier repository for everyone to share fliers they have made.  A photo gallery might also be useful.  What else should we use a website for?  How would we make our website easy to find through Google, etc.?

I'm new to this group, and I see it's been a while since this discussion has had any comments, but yes, yes, YES - kidical mass in Chicago needs a website. If your friend can't do it, I will be more than happy to create a blog/site on my servers - it doesn't cost me anything to add additional domains. I think a site is huge - one place for all your updates, flyers, any press, to link to. I would also be happy to optimize it a bit so the search engines find it. Our 6 yr old finally got a great slightly adaptive bike this summer (he has Cerebral Palsy) and has worked his way up to about 3-4 miles now on our city rides, so he'll be able to do Kidical mass rides with a break. That's my interest - I've been a cyclist for a long time, and now I'm into family riding and adaptive biking - if you see my blog, that's what I'm all about. Anyway, if you need my help, let me know. One more thing - once you have a domain name secured, I can set up google apps for free, which, along with the site, would give you a free, shared repository for documents - I think I saw some requests for that.
My neighborhood association (Lake View Citizens' Council) has been hosting rides and getting decent turnout just through their email list. They have little connection to the cycling community. I'd encourage you to reach out to the block clubs or neighborhood associations where the ride is happening and ask them to partner in spreading the word.
