Proposed, _suggested_, bike route for the October 30th 2015 Halloween Chicago Critical Mass ride.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kastigar/21172769144/in/dateposted-public/

Copied from the map from 2006 - 9 year old and in keeping with many of the old traditions. Except for the final stretch down Montrose to the beach, all the the stretches are short and there are frequent turns to slow down the ride and keep the ride massed-up. The longest stretches are:

Van Buren, from State to Clinton: 3/4 mile
Clybourn, from Division to Halsted: 5/8 mile
Lincoln, from Fullerton to Diversey: 7/10 mile

The Lance Armstrong Wannabees may attempt to hijack the ride so they can speed up and ride fast - which spreads out the mass like what happened in August and September. That isn't how the Critical Mass is supposed to work. The ride is for everybody, from 8 to 80. Let the trixies go their own path, or turn around to stay with us.

A few more rides like the last two months and a lot of the 'regulars' are just going to stop coming. The number of riding coming downtown at 5:30 on the last Friday of the month will dwindle. This is already happening in other cities.

We need more people to stop up, plan, and lead. Draw another map for October. Bring a ride map you'd like to go on for November. Find a new way to get to the Polkaholics in January. Short routes, off the main roads for a while. A turn every 1/2 mile. Avoid long straight-line, long distance main routes. Lead us through neighborhoods. Suggest mass-up points to stop and mass up.

The map suggestion was copied from the 2006 Halloween ride; if anyone knows the original cartographer who suggested this map, let all of us know so that they can be given credit. I'd rather not just steal but to give credit where credit is due.

Buon Giorno a tutti!!

Plans for May's critical mass are in the works as well as an after party where the mass can end. This will be the first time planning a ride & we would love comments, suggestions & ideas to make it great! The building/studios where the mass will end is having an art project/display all month and we want to create a great place to end the mass & kick off summer!

The Chainlink Halloween party has been announced for Fri 10/26, meaning it's the most obvious destination for the mass.

I will see about rounding up some Little Village folks to plan a map that takes in the 26th street business district before ending at WBC.

To celebrate our upcoming 15th anniversary, we are rekindling the ever popular Critical Mass t-shirt giveaway. For the 10th anniversary, volunteers donated blank shirts and money for silk screening supplies, and a couple dozen people spent about a dozen hours printing over 800 shirts to give away before the ride. [pix from the 10th anniversary]

Another idea for making this September's ride extra special is having an afterparty. A park would be nice as we can all fit. Humboldt Park was suggested. It would be cool to have a few food trucks and a DJ on site when we arrive.

To keep planning and prep moving along, I will be hosting a few events leading up to September's ride:

Derailluer Assembly Party
Thu Aug 30, 6pm - 11pm
A good chance to network and start gathering funds, supplies, and volunteers.

Critical Mass T-shirt Printing Weekend
Sep 22-23, Noon - 6pm
I would like to have multiple designs to print, but that makes production a bit trickier, and we'll need even more volunteers.

Event pages and deets coming soon, let me know if you have any ideas, moneys, skills, or supplies to lend to the effort.

Fundamentally, the presumed immediate path is upgrading the Drupal Content Management System to current. It may need to be stepped through intermediate versions, or conceivably exported/imported. Some suggest conversion to a new CMS, but I think that's unrealistic given the scope and variety of the content (but I'd consider it if a demo could be rapidly prototyped).

There is urgent need as we can't add CAPTCHA to the outdated framework.

So, any reasonably good PHP coders / cyclists out there eager to learn Drupal? You'll probably at least need to already know how to set up a local Apache/MySQL/PHP dev sys. Or (crossing-fingers) anyone with Drupal experience? If you've got time (like 40+ est. project hrs) please be a hero.

Respond here, discuss, or contact me. Thanx!
The Pride Ridetag:thechainlink.org,2012-06-26:2211490:Topic:5621382012-06-26T04:51:14.223ZReddog (Cliff)https://thechainlink.org/profile/Reddog

Would require fast work (mass is THIS Friday), but I'd like to suggest a "not straight" mass for June observing pride month. Would use almost entirely diagonal (or wiggly or zigzag or discontinuous) streets.

I personally have no further specific thoughts yet (other than the obvious: Elston, Lincoln, Milwaukee, ...). Just publishing the idea. I think it was originally Dubi's a few years ago.

In 2009+2010 Chris lead September rides to the American Indian Center where we were greeted with music and art and food.
