Last time Janis (79) was in Riga, capital city of Latvia, it was "during Soviet times". He lives 60 km from Riga; however, his bicycle is the only means of transportation throughout the year, as there is no public transport. Janis is one of thousands of Latvian people without cars, obliged to commute and endangering themselves during the dark months of winter. Nearest bus stop and rudimentary shop for Janis is nearly 10 km from his home. He can consider himself lucky, as some live 45 km from the nearest shop.

I was super lazy over the winter, managing only 639.8 miles between January and now, my worst month being February with a low of 142.2 miles, March is my high of 308 miles commuting to work (I cycled to work every day in March). All in all, though I think I am doing well- and I am not counting the grocery trips and other errands I do by bike, so probably more miles forgotten there.  I have only started keeping track of commute miles, but maybe should start to track other cycling activities.

Oh hey I didn't realize we were doing milecounts. Total for this year so far: 740.7 miles

January - 130.5

February - 199.6

March - 372.2

Dang I guess I did get lazy over the winter.

Over 700 miles so far in 2011. Around 600-650 of those are commuter...

307.2 all purpose miles. I don't recall biking for recreation yet this year, so let's assume that's 100% commuting miles.

With the ice gone (no bike lanes or salted/plowed sidepaths), that number should increase in a hurry from here on out.
