Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

The next PBP is in 2011.

Oh, I'm interested. But first I need to build the bike....

That qualifies as long distance, which I guess is the essence of randonneuring.

Here's the definition of randonneuring:
"Randonneuring is a type of organised long distance bicycle riding, with rides typically covering between 100 and 1,200 kilometres (60-750 miles). A participant is known as a randonneur, and an event is a randonnée. The term brevet is used interchangeably with randonnée, although strictly speaking, a brevet is one specific type of event.

Randonneuring is not a competitive sport. It is a test of endurance, self-sufficiency and bicycle touring skills. All riders who complete the task are congratulated, and no prizes are given to those with the fastest times."

A randonneur is someone who participates in randonneuring (me: captain obvious).

Let's not limit this group to rando-whatevers, though.

I definitely want to do PBP within the next few years.

Totally a randonneuring dork at heart here. Would love to find a group of others interested in doing some longer rides. I have kicked around the idea of trying to qualify for PBP on my fixed gear. From what I hear there are quite a few who do it.

There are a few guys in the Rogers Park neighborhood. At least one of them commutes every day to HP. He did PBP a couple of years ago!

I should have known there'd be some down in the HP (where smarts peoples are). I'll have to get to know some.

Nick, there are many dozens of rando heads around. I'm surprised you haven't run into any... Down here alone there are several who are serious enough to do the Wisonsin brevet series and even a couple who've done PBP.

I'm starting this group since I don't really know anyone in Chicago that's interested in randonneuring. If you are, join up!
