Cops: Chicago bicyclist dies after 'minor' crash in Niles

A 72-year-old bicyclist died this morning after he was struck by a vehicle in a "minor accident" in north suburban Niles, officials said.

Stanley Lorkiewicz of the 7500 block of North Octavia Avenue was riding his bicycle in 7700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue near Jonquil Terrace when he was struck by a vehicle, according to a spokesman for the Niles Police Department.

Lorkiewicz exchanged information with the motorist and the police were called to the scene, police said. Police described the incident as a "minor accident."

While the officers were writing up a report on the incident, Lorkiewicz collapsed at the scene. He was revived and taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he was pronounced dead at 8:48 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

No citations were written in connection with the accident.

An autopsy Tuesday ruled Lorkiewicz died from a heart attack and the secondary cause was from heart disease.
