The Chainlink

Hey everyone, Im new to the chainlink / group. I just started experimenting with S24Os and other short one night tours. I usually start around the Lake County, Dekalb county or Kenosha county areas. If any one would like to join I try and do one atleast every other week if not every week, usually sticking to trails or back roads. Its a great way to eas into touring and really get to know your equipment and your self without having to worry.

Any one have any good S24O stories?

So does it really have to be less than 24 hours to count as S24O? If I leave home at 1pm, i have to be back by tomorrow 1pm?
We have done various weekend rides (leave first thing Saturday, come back Sunday afternoon) I liked them because it didn't feel like we were in a rush as much, yet we were able to put in some decent mileage

Well I think that was the idea behind the name, but I for sure don't pay attention to stuff like that. I consider any tour less then two major sleeping periods a S24O. But to each their own right? :-)

Keep it fun

I wouldn't mind doing some bike camping. So far all I've done this summer is a weekend in Chain O'Lake (nice but mosquito ridden). Do you go to real sites or stealth camp?
Wow. Forgot bout this post. My bad :-/
I stealth camp unless there is a need to find a camp site or its the better of the two options. I really like going to Chain O' Lakes, minus the killer raccoons.
I did a 33 hour overnight tour from Chicago up to IL state beach in Zion a couple weeks ago. Its a good route for those looking to get their feet wet touring (like myself) since it runs along the metra line most of the way. It allows anyone looking to bail for whatever reason an easy out, and they could still make it up to the campground via metra or home without the all the miles. There are various bike paths that will lead up there, though the last 10 miles are gravel paths and many time taking parallel streets is a good alternative. The state park is not marked from the bike path north, so you need to know when to turn off the path. There isn't an exit, only a small strip of singletrack leading down to Wadsworth Ave which will bring you into the park. Its about 50 miles each way from the city.
I used to go to Illinois Beach State Park when my own mother was alive many Mother's Day weekends. I'd start from Milwaukee on Saturday morning and make camp at Illinois Beach in the evening. I took Rte. WI 31/IL 131 to Wadsworth Rd. and take Wadsworth into the park. The next day, I'd break camp and head for Waukegan to visit Mom, then return to Milwaukee. If I were to take the Mc Clory Trail south, Where would I have to get off in order to take Wadsworth Rd. into Illinois Beach?
I did this...I think where the trail crosses 33rd street. Then you've just got a couple blocks south and east on roads until the park entrance at Wadsworth...I always just ask people, how I figured this out was from a nice bike commuter named Randy. Usually cyclists and joggers are good with directions to local spots like that.
