Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-) 

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

9-40-060 Driving, standing or parking on bicycle paths or lanes prohibited. (a) The driver of a vehicle shall not drive, unless entering or exiting a legal parking space, or stand, or park the vehicle upon any on-street path or lane designated by official signs or markings for the use of bicycles, or otherwise drive or place the vehicle in such a manner as to impede bicycle traffic on such path or lane. The first graph is misleading, as vehicle miles traveled has been increasing each year for quite some time. The fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2017 was 1.16, which was higher than the lowest value of 1.08 in 2014. That's a 7.4% increase. The total number of deaths increased over 20%.

No doubt distracted driving and distracted walking is playing a major part.

My hunch is you're right Argonne.  From the active transportation alliance: "Drivers distracted by their devices are a well-documented, rising cause of traffic crashes, but there are a growing number of pedestrians, too, who can become oblivious to traffic around them."

Other info from this article (I'll share the link below) : 

"Other factors include vehicle speeds and alcohol use — not just by drivers, but by pedestrians. According to the most recent GHSA report, 33 percent of pedestrian fatalities involved a pedestrian with a blood alcohol content above the legal driving limit. Of course, it's not illegal to walk while drunk, but it can be dangerous — even deadly.

Seventy-five percent of fatalities occurred in the dark, and in 72 percent of the victim was walking in or crossing a road and wasn't in an intersection."  

So in the old days, a driver would screw up, but another driver who was alert and driving defensively could react and help mitigate the situation, sometimes successfully.  Ditto for a pedestrian. But now with smart phones, that "reflex" opportunity may be gone, and both drivers and pedestrians may themselves be prone to mistakes due to distraction.

Bottom line:  Whether driving, cycling, or walking, putting the smart phone away may be the smart thing. Likewise as I've worried about with the Three Floyds thread, travel and booze don't mix so well either.

I took this picture May 10. The bike is still  there on Washington at  Clark in a  pretty well used  lane. It seems abandoned but i am  loathe to  ask for it's removal as I suspect a person  of very limited means locked that bike in that spot.
