Update 11-5-18 Unfinished Bike Lane on Michigan and Randolph Alarms Cyclists

"A newly-installed bike lane (unfinished) connecting the lakefront to the Chicago Loop seems to be causing more confusion and less convenience, however. An unusual traffic pattern at that intersection leaves motorists turning left onto Michigan avenue criss-crossing the bike lanes.

Have you rode there? What do you think of this bike lane configuration?"

Randolph bike lane in general is a study in many close calls, with drivers turning into the lane for the parking garage and mindless pedestrians being dropped off by careless uber/lyft drivers. It's a very frustrating commute.

In the teaser to the segment, Rob is back to his old tricks.

Rob Johnson, could you at least make believe that you're impartial towards cyclists. You are a journalist aren't you. Vehicle drivers break laws constantly with a much more dangerous hunk of metal.

I ride these lanes every day.  The new configuration actually pushes westbound Upper Randolph traffic into the bike lane to accommodate the merging bike lane coming up from middle Randolph. When Upper Randolph was built, there was zero development east of Columbus.  Now with Millennium Park, Maggie Daley Park, and the thousands of new residents in Lakeshore East, the current configuration of Upper Randolph just can't handle the added traffic.

Here's my solution:  Randolph needs to be reconfigured to be the same way that Wacker Drive is between LSD and Michigan Avenue.  On the east end, build ramps for cars, bikes, and pedestrians to get from the lakefront to Upper Randolph, with a just a single exit lane continuing on the middle level west and ending at Columbus.  Then cap the west end ramps currently coming out of middle Randolph so the entire width can be used for Upper Randolph users between Columbus and Michigan.  No more merging, and plenty of width for buffered bike lanes.
