The Chainlink

Hey all,

My bike was stolen this weekend from the corner of Fullerton and Western.

It was stolen on Saturday, and on Tuesday I was on my front porch (kimball and wrightwood ish) and some dude rides by on it. You can probably imagine how that felt.

I ran down the street and caught up with the guy and his friends and told him what was up. I should have called the cops right then, but I had a cold/cold medicine side effects, and was kind of in shock.

They saw that I was in my socks (derp) and just rode off. I didn't stand a chance because my bike is awesome.

It's a Fuji Del Rey, dark gray almost black (road bike from the 1986, down tube is 48 cm or so). Drop bars are unwrapped, they removed my front brake among other things.

EDIT: Here's a photo

Thanks

Sorry about your bike!

Plenty of rumors about the local . . . "social club" around those parts being all up into stolen bikes . . . did you get a "banger" vibe?

Also-- my impression is that they (as in the alleged club)  mostly target bikes locked to poles (by removing the poles)-- is it pretty clear that they broke or cut a U-lock to steal the bike?

Yeah it was Ulocked to one of the common black-rectangle bike racks. No lock to be found though.

It was three guys, maybe 17-20 years old. One of the others had a road bike that also had the front brake removed.

I had a second to talk to them before they took off,

one said he had bought it for $25 and that he "works on bikes"

...right.

THIS SUCKS.

True.

"Wigwam," do you have a plan for what you would do if you were to spot it again, or if you were notified by someone who saw it?  Was there a police report, proof of ownership, etc.?

Before seeing it the other day I only had it listed on the stolen bike registry.

Right after I saw it I called the police and described the dude/location,

and the operator took all the details about the theft after I told him I hadn't filed a police report.

I'll call the police right away next time. Wasn't thinking on my feet Tuesday.

I've been thinking about  your situation and what I would have done.  I would probably have just been jawdropped and frozen.  And then it would have hit me and I wouldn't have known what to do.

I live in Humboldt Park, so if you could post a picture it would help me keep a better eye out.

Thanks much, I've added a photo at the top
