Riding to Lake Geneva on Saturday

Hi Everyone,


I'm planning a trip up to Lake Geneva, WI this Saturday and at 86ish miles, it will be the longest ride I've done (longest so far has been about 60 miles).  I'm also planning to ride it by myself (unless one of you wants to join me, which would be cool) and wanted to just get general advice about touring solo from those of you who may have done it.  I don't want to get halfway there and find out that I'm screwed for some reason.  My bike is in good repair and though my tires are in good shape, I'm planning to take a couple extra tubes just in case.  Also, I've checked out a couple route options that seem fine, but does anyone have a favorite?

I would join you if I have a week notice or so. Sorry I have no tips, because I am a novice on long distance riding as well. Have a blast!

I recommend you head for Fontana on S side of the Lake; easiest approach is (from Johnsburg in Chain O Lakes) (31) Richmond Rd to Barnard Mill, Tryon / Vanderkarr to Wilke (47), N thru Hebron then left on Willow / S Lakeshore Dr.  Get a Weiss beer at Chuck's; you can't miss it.

Yeh, this is a bad weekend for me as well.  I've been looking to do this ride.  I also have been looking to do some rides+camp in Wisc.  Its terrible that they don't allow bikes on Amtrak going to Milwaukee without boxing them.  Enjoy the ride.

Scenic Shore 150 and Best Dam Bike Ride look great, if you can raise money.
I'm also looking to do a (long) weekend bike-camp tour north w/o fund raising, please share if you have any pointers.

Harvard Metra is 20 miles from Lake Geneva, in case you want to do one way by bike and the return by train (or break down). Plus Metra weekend pass is $7, so you can't beat it.

As for Milwaukee, Metra to Kenosha, and then trail to Milwaukee is 40 miles.

My friend and I did this ride this exact weekend last year. It was a great ride. We stopped at Volo Auto Museum on the way back. Make sure to stop every hour/10 miles or so to hydrate, because in this weather you will sweat more than you know. Pack as light as you can. That was one of the biggest mistakes we made. Also, I was windburned on the way back...

North Shore Channel Trail to

Green Bay Trail to

Robert McClory Bike Path(formerly North Shore Bike Path) to

Millennium Trail to

Prairie Trail.

Of course they don't all connect as easy as that looks, but that's the way we took to get there. I think Millennium Trail has a series of curvy, steep hills for about two miles. It wasn't expected.

Last weekend two friends of mine went on this ride and had a great time. There's a place just north of Lake Geneva that does Zip Line Canopy Tours...That's a lot of fun. There was a Yelp deal when we were there, but it's probably gone.
