Police arrest 2 tied to train station bike thefts

By Annemarie Mannion, Chicago Tribune reporter

La Grange police have arrested two men they say may have been largely responsible for a string of bike thefts at Metra commuter stations in the village.

Brent Carlson, 34, of the 600 block of North Park Street, La Grange Park, was arrested Aug. 6 and charged with residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. Police said they observed Carlson looking at bikes outside the Stone Avenue Metra station. He then went to a house in the 500 block of South Park Street where police say he removed a bike from an open garage. He is being held on $150,000 bond at Cook County Jail.

Police arrested Adam P. Potesak, 27, of the 3400 block of South Cuyler Avenue, Berwyn, Aug. 9. Police said they saw Potesak use bolt cutters to cut the lock on a bike parked at the Stone Avenue station. He was charged with felony theft, criminal damage to property and resisting arrest. He is being held on $50,000 bond at Cook County Jail.

Police Chief Michael Holub said 20 bikes have been reported stolen in the village since the end of May and similar thefts have been reported along the train lines in nearby communities.

"Although lock cutters were used in some of the thefts, we did note that most of the bicycles stolen had low-end locks, which were easily defeated," Holub said.
