The Chainlink

Hey friends, in about a week I plan on doing a solo ride across most of New York.  I have done distance rides before but always on flat land and always supported.  I have been scouring craigslist for a touring bike (surly long-haul surly cross-check jamis aurora trek 520 ect) for weeks but have come up unsuccessful.  I will be staying at places along the way so as a result I wont be carrying as much weight, just some clothes food and tools.  Unfortunately right now I also just don't have the money to throw down for a new bike + racks fenders etc.  Does anyone have any recommendations for me.  Or, more importantly (yes I know this is a shot in the dark) does anyone have a touring bike I could BORROW.  I am 5'6" and I typically ride a 53cm although I am sure 52cm or maybe even 51cm would do the trick.  In return maybe I can have it nicely tuned up upon completion?  I am willing to figure out some form of barter or payment :) I am that much in need!!!

Have you gone over to Working Bikes to see what they have?

uh - just get a functioning well maintained bike you know you can ride across New York and put a decent trailer on it.  Preferably a hybrid or a rigid frame MTB with 26" slicks.  I have 90 PSI slicks on my MTB wheels and they're FAST.

I'll bet you can borrow a decent trailer alot faster than you can someone's touring bike.  Indeed I have a home built trailer which packs up into a US Army gear bag.......

Yeah I'm starting to realize that I may not exactly need a touring specific bike. Thanks for the tips guys! Really appreciate it!
