The Chainlink

I am off work  tomorrow and wanted to get in a ride without dealing with too much traffic, has anyone been on either trail as of late?

The NBT isn't maintained in the winter.  But do you own a pair of ice skates?

I would like to attempt a winter ride of the NBT.

I am up for a try, cyclocross or MTB?

Studded tires.

I took Dearborn going North from the Loop on Friday.  Crossed to the LFP at North Ave.

Mistake.  Between North and Fullerton = Not Good! Path not maintained, areas where ice was literally 8 - 10 inches thick on the path; never saw anything like it last year.

Fullerton to Buena where I exit was fine.

BTW, my wife was like "yeah, don't do that again . . . " She likes me in one piece!

I only have one bike and it has regular tires.  I would not do well on ice.

I took the LFP south from Hollywood to Fullerton last Wednesday, 12/15. Like IITWI said, at Fullerton headed south the LFP appeared to be a sheet of ice. I didn't attempt to go any further but instead took Fullerton to Clark and went south from there. If you have studded tires and cat tracks on your boots, the ride might be a fun adventure. Otherwise, well, no.

FYI: I rode the LFP from the loop north to Hollywood on Thursday 12/9 w/o any trouble. This ice problem was a gift of last weekend's big storm...

On Friday evening, I rode the LFP south from Monroe Harbor to Hyde Park, and had no problems.  I note that the southern portion of the LFP is often well maintained in the winter (i.e., plowed and salted and quite ridable with normal tires).

I ride the LFP between Grand Ave and 57th Street in Hyde Park for my commute.  I echo Joe's comments on the condition.  I walk my bike for a stretch in the area behind the Shedd Aquarium, but other than that, the ride is generally good.  There are a few rough (but passable) patches: south of Buckingham Fountain on the straight-away, south of McCormick place, north of 47th street (more mud than snow/ice), and north of 51st street.

(Hey, my first post on The Chainlink!)

I rode the LFP last friday from Belmont to Fullerton. The trail was closed with police tape at that point, and beyond it was solid ice. I have studded tires, but the path up to fullerton was plowed and salted.

My commute from Roscoe Village to the Loop is usually School St > LFP > Monroe (usually no trouble with LFP foot traffic as I ride early and late). Until the ice pack. Now I'm riding Lincoln Ave. > Wells or Damen > Elston > Milwaukee. Looking forward to a warm snap to melt that stuff!

Huh?

The last 2 years I took the lake path all the way from Edgewater to Oak Street. The area past that is prone to wave splash and will freeze feet thick.

I'm curious now I'll have to see what it's like.
