Ghost bike for bicyclist killed on 18th Street in August

I'm sure a lot of you heard about the death of Fred Kobrick, who was killed by a drunk driver on 18th & Carpenter this past August.

For a little over a month there was a small memorial with a picture and candles in front of the restaurant where he was killed. There was also a ghost bike chained to a nearby pole.

I live right across the street from where the accident happened and a few weeks ago I noticed that the memorial had been removed. And then a little over a week ago I noticed that the ghost bike had been removed as well.

Does anyone know anything about this or have any information on how/why ghost bikes are removed -- and by who? Does anyone else know of other ghost bikes that have been removed and/or why? Any information would be appreciated.

I tracked down the ghost bike today.

Reportedly it kept getting knocked over, and had been placed in a spot where there are frequently a bunch of vendors packed in, and the wind kept making a mess out of whatever items were placed around the bike, so a local business owner put it in storage. I spoke to him and came away feeling that his intent was good.

It seems it had never had a sign made, which may have been part of the problem.

Anyone up for making a sign? I'll spring for the chain (~$20)
