While I like my Trek fixed gear conversion, I think the gearing is a bit high, especially for running studded tires. To all you fixie riders out there, what sizes are you running for chainring and cog?

I have 48-16 which until I got a smaller hub on the rear I rarely rode fixed.

My top end is lower now but I can successfully stop! I also ride with brakes just in case.

I've seen the gear changing taken off and just using different size chains on the remaining cogs to adjust speed

Not sure how that works out?

44:17 (1:2.58) and way happy with it for years.

47:16

700x25 tires

170mm cranks

Thanks. I don't skid, but the equivalent gear combinations are nice.

Use it.  It's awesome.

I'm currently using 47:17 (if memory serves). I'm older than most/all of you though, and with the studded 700x30 tires, that's a bit high for my aging knees. If I drop to 46:18 I'll probably be okay, and be able to use my current chain. Alas, that crank in my avatar is 151BCD, so it takes me a bit longer to dredge up a new chainring. :-)

I used to ride a 52/13 but me was a silly lad. I like 48-16 now.

44-18 works for my path riding.

Currently 48:17 from a 48:15 last year, and I can feel the difference in those 2 extra t's in the cog. I think for Chicago, and my knees, it's not bad. Although my preferred commuter ratio is 44:17 for everyday fun, or if hills and/or strong wind are present.

44X17

Hey you wimps... I ride 14 in the rear.

... but I have 36 in front.

All of which gives me the same gear ratio as a 44x17.

Looks like you're carrying a little extra weight in that frame that most folks. <wink>

Thanks for the replies folks. I've got to start hunting down a new chainring and a new cog. Of course, when I built my Trek, I used a 151BCD crank up front, and a Miche carrier+cog setup in back. Neither option is as available as other common options.
