The Chainlink

Hey Chainlinkers,

I'm looking for a new doctor (general checkup, etc.) and was curious if anyone in this forum can recommend one who has a background in cycling or one that treats cyclists.

Ideally I am looking for someone who is familiar with the typical health issues that cyclists are more likely to encounter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks as always!

It sounds like you are looking for a new Primary Care Physician (PCP). I don't think he rides, but I don't know if I could give more praise than to my PCP, Dr. Sean O'Connor at Northwestern. Great doctor, great guy, great medical group and located by Chicago/Michigan so easy to get to from Loop.

As for "typical health issues" that cyclists encounter, you might want to consider (if your insurance or finances allow it) seeing an orhthopedic specialist. All MDs are not the same, each has a different area of specialization. Most PCPs are "internal medicine" specialists, essentially they are generalists. Orthopedic physicians, however, are specialists in the human frame (bones, muscles, tendons, etc.) So depending on your issue an ortho may be the way to go. Most of the docs with Midwest Orthopedics/Rush are very, very good and some focus on Sports Medicine.

Good question.

My general doctor is also not a cyclist, but she is great.

"Dr. Tom" MacNeil Zimmerman is very much a cyclist and treats many cyclists.  He's a chiropractor, and takes a very wholistic approach to healing. Not that he draws blood or anything, but can help with bone issues, what to eat, how to stretch, etc.

Thanks two both of you for the responses, I'll look into both of them!

Dan Litoff.

Great guy, and took one of my favorite bicycling photos ever:

If you're going to go the ortho doc route, I work closely with Mitchell Goldflies, who's a cyclist:

Dr. Ernesto Villegas of ErgoMedica in the West Loop is a cyclist and great guy.  They are always very attentive to my wife and I's needs when we have appointments.
