The Chainlink

Hi there! I hate that this is my first post here.

My Trek FX 7.1 was stolen from my family's shared garage sometime between 5 PM on Tuesday and 6 PM yesterday. It's possible that the people we share the garage with accidentally left the door open, but my parents think that another tenant in our building (who hates my dad) is responsible.

We filed it as missing on-line (my dad has an account already because ~3 months ago his bike was stolen when the garage door was left open). There were a couple of other bikes in the garage and some other nice stuff, but my bike was the only thing taken. I just finished paying it off in July, too. :[

Fortunately my bike is a little distinctive, so here's a description if anyone happens to see it (I know it's a long shot): like I said, it's a trek FX 7.1 hybrid that's light green. The pedals are bright pink. It has a black rack over the back tire. There are little green/blue lights on the valves (anyone who went to Bike to Brew knows what I'm talking about!) that flash when the bike is moving. There's a tag on the top tube from the Toyota Triathlon that's starting to fade (though a smart bike thief would remove that pretty quickly). Only one handlebar end has the little plug in it. Finally, there is a cyclocomputer sensor on the front fork, and a computer holder on the left side of the handlebars, both held on by uncut zip ties. It had a black and yellow Kryptonite New York Forgetaboutit lock hanging from the handlebars (because why would I lock up my bike in my own garage? pah!).

As for the prime suspect - my parents don't want to confront him, they're keeping it quiet and waiting for him to slip and say something about a stolen bike. Would you do the same thing?

Sorry about your bike, MC.

I'd probably list it here:

Unfortunately a garage is not a safe place for an unlocked bicycle in this city.

Registered it there right after posting this h', definitely a good step to take.

Cameron, that's a pretty good idea. We don't really have anything in the garage I could lock my bike to (aside from itself), so having something to anchor it down seems smart.

My parents strongly suspect it was a person in our building with keys to the garage, and are fortunately willing to help me pay for a replacement since it was (probably) stolen for personal reasons that I had nothing to do with. So that's good in a way!

Sorry to hear this, we had 3 bikes stolen out of our garage a few years back. We suspected the neighbors who are now long gone. All of our bikes now live in the house. Not an option for all so lock it up in the garage if it must be there for the next one...

A suggestion I keep making: ENGRAVE your name and drivers license or ID number in the upper part of the frame, highly visible.

This make it easier to identify the bike, easier to claim it if it's lost or stolen, and less attractive to steal since it would need to be sanded down to remove the engraving.

The downside is it would be harder to sell, if you thought you might.  Also, it does make it look less attractive.
