The Chainlink

It is not sufficient for bike lanes to simply exist; they must provide a superior experience to the cyclist. Faced with a choice between a hazard-filled bike lane where I have to dodge puddles, potholes, pedestrians, and parked cars and a well-maintained street where I have to share the road with motor vehicles, I'll choose the latter.

Cyclist cries because his bike lane isn't smooth or clean enough.

Sorry pal, this is Chicago.  I hate crappy streets as much as the next guy but it's just one of the things everyone has to deal with, drivers and cyclists alike.

"Ghetto" really?  Why not go right on into Godwins law?

+1 Juan - Original Good Streets Movement of the 1870s through 1920s was led by cyclists protesting "crappy streets" and successfully demanding smoother pavement.

Take the lane, take the whole damn road.  $50/gallon and to hell with the murderous metal boxes with wheels. 

I suggest you get over it, streets suck sometimes it's really not that big a deal.

It think the use of the word ghetto here is way overzealous.

I agree with you Juan, and have my own personal hatred of certain city of Chicago bike lane blocks, such as the 2000 block of Lincoln Avenue.  I tried years ago to get the city to replace the crumbled heap of cobbles on this stretch but it fell on deaf ears.  I myself ride in the car lane to get around it frequently.

However I am ashamed that like many Chicagoans Im just kind of taking it up just take it the a$$ and have gotten lazy about it.  Lets both call the Active Transportation Alliance, the alderman in the stated areas of interest, and any other contacts Chainlinkers might recommend to take action.

which bike lanes in particular are you referring to?  I ride almost all of them and don't experience your issues. 

ghetto is just an over-hipsterized word.  Lets focus on the problem.  Where are the bike lanes that are causing you the most pain, Juan?
