Alderman Reilly introduces measure to remove Kinzie protected bike lane - The Chainlink2024-03-29T01:50:31Zhttps://thechainlink.org/forum/topics/alderman-rilly-introduces-measure-to-remove-kinzie-protected-bike?commentId=2211490%3AComment%3A905331&xg_source=activity&feed=yes&xn_auth=noI'm skeptical about the route…tag:thechainlink.org,2015-04-23:2211490:Comment:9063692015-04-23T13:29:02.892ZDean Bekkenhttps://thechainlink.org/profile/DeanBekken

I'm skeptical about the route proposed for "Grand Avenue," which is a one-way street between Navy Pier and Wells. I suspect the route would follow that of busses, which turn right on Wells and follow Illinois to the Pier turnaround. Illinois is easily one of the busiest streets in Chicago at most times of day. It has far too many parking lots to accommodate a safe bike lane; right hooks, cutoffs and logjams from cars looking to park are inevitable. The dangers and pollution encountered by…

The dangers and pollution encountered by cyclists from busses are something we go out of our way to avoid; most cyclists can stay ahead of a bus, but being caught behind one is hellish.

I will continue to ride on Kinzie when I wish to. I recommend that all cyclists do the same, regardless of the "temporary" closure of the city's first protected lanes.

I looked up a presentation that's linked to the developer's web site for the project. It's worth reading. Look carefully at the traffic access portion of the plan. Page 55 (Site Access Update) is of particular interest for the long-term traffic picture. The primary access point is a loop off of upper Orleans opposite the Merchandise Mart driveway. This is illustrated on several pages, starting with page 13. …
