And, is it just me, or is that chainring freakishly large? If that thing is a city bike, who the heck commutes on something like a 53/18 and in the drops the entire time?

I do. I ride a 53/18 and it works just fine :)

Would work really well on a 20"-wheeled mini-velo bike...

Huh. I looked at the gear inch calculator, and that's about 77 GI. I thought it was more. I used to commute on a SS/FG with 48/18 on the freewheel and 48/15 on the fixed cog. 70 GI felt 1000x better than  84 GI. More power to ya though.

More like $960. Even that is a lot of money for a bike with tektro levers.
