Oh yes - I was reallllly thinking about doing this....but due to a recent injury I'm in no shape to make it happen. I did half of this ride from Illinois to Madison with a fellow Chainlink member a long time ago....I could drive the support vehicle but I'm also light on the cash to get that going, plus I could be using that time to get back in shape!! HOWEVER.....La Crosse is located on the Mississippi River near the Great River State Park Trail and the Mississippi River Trail.

This ride stops in New Glarus for New Glarus Brewery beer...and a brewery tour.....their beer is some kind of other-worldly delight, I think, or ambrosia on tap...their bottled beer is not as dreamy but still quite good... I hope the beer will be worth the 4,255 feet of hill climbing and at least 228 miles (not including the trip to Harvard, Illinois) we'll have to complete this ride!

The major backbone of the La Crosse - Madison - Rockford tour is - you guessed it - lots of crushed stone trails. I am really not fond of riding on the road with traffic, since, in my opinion, that's where stuff happens. Here are the major trails which are the focus of the ride:

The Elroy-Sparta State Trail - includes a famous long tunnel which will be either fascinating or terrifying depending on your bike lighting.

City of Madison trails and streets

The Badger State Trail - where we will happily encounter New Glarus Brewery.

The Jane Addams Recreational Trail into Illinois.

Pecatonica Prairie Trail (Orangeville) to Rockford, Illinois.

(Optional) Long Prairie Trail to Harvard, Illinois - Metra connections to Chicago from Rockford are found in Harvard, Illinois 35 miles away or about three to four hours on a fully loaded touring bike.

Hello Chainlinkers! Just wanted to introduce myself and share a current bikepacking adventure with you-- worthy detours and travel tips most welcome! I'm Kristen. My travel partner and I are currently biking (unsupported) from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico, roughly following the Mississippi River the whole way. We hit the Mississippi headwaters at Itasca yesterday. Any former Mississippi River Trail riders with suggestions? Our pace is slow enough to allow for ample side trips and explorations, especially for unique and quirky highlights. Trip blog w/ map is www.bikebigmuddy.com and on Instagram #bikebigmuddy.

Since we LOVE biking Chicago's West side (where we normally live), our goal is to raise $1 per mile for the outstanding Girls Bike Club of West Town Bike Coop. By adopting a segment of the route, you'll get a postcard from whatever mile(s) of the river you choose. 100% of contributions go towards these worthy young female bikers, ages 8-20, who love learning about bike mechanics, riding together, and being ambassadors for other young people in their community to start biking. They even recently rode up to IL Beach State Park for a club campout. The group is saving up now to attend a national youth bike summit. Video and more in at youcaring.com/bikebigmuddy if you'd like to support youth empowerment through biking in Chicago!

Thanks for any help, travel-related or towards our cause. Happy biking! -Kristen
Boulevard Lakefront Tour 36 mile maptag:thechainlink.org,2015-08-24:2211490:Topic:9402212015-08-24T20:47:03.265ZGreg Berryhttps://thechainlink.org/profile/GregBerry

Wanted to share with everyone just how great the Boulevard Lakefront Tour was this past weekend! Aside from getting lost on it and going through some really rough construction zones, the ride was amazing. I recorded the 36 mile route on my Garmin and wanted to share it with the community in the event people wanted to attend but could not. Hope this makes someone's day!…

Sad to think the summer will be coming to a close, but to celebrate Active Trans' 30th Anniversary, the Boulevard Lakefront Tour will be returning on August 23 to give participants another chance to get in some wonderful riding before the cold winds arrive.

And I'm returning to recruit volunteers! Thank you so much to many of you who have helped out at Bike the Drive and showed up to Bike to Work Week. And to everyone who said hi this weekend at Tour De Fat. Not to get too heartfelt, but seeing actual community in action tends to warm my cockles. So I'm here again to ask you to help out with BLT.

The routes (14/28/36/63) are heading along the Lake, through Washington/Douglas/Garfield Parks and in the longest case, going all the way up the North Branch to Linne Woods. We definitely need ride marshals and their mechanical skills, but are also intently seeking Course Marshals who can actually make it to their posts (bikes help with this, as it turns out!). Grab some pals and bring snacks and make a day!

If you know of any community groups or orgs interested in volunteering, they can qualify for a $150 donations with a group of 15. Additionally I'm looking for tenacious route markers the week before the event to mark the routes with paint -- if we had a small group of people (bike clubs? young folks?), we would also be happy to compensate!

Please head to: http://bltride.org/volunteer if you are interested or email carmen@activetrans.org. And thanks again! See ya at the volunteer party!
