Hey Chicago Bicycle friends!

Instead of simply being mad about the issue, I'm interested in doing something about it. One way to work on this issue is through creating a way to identify where these issues are taking place, tracking these violations, identifying problem locations and hopefully create an automated/fast/easy way to file a report with the city.

The first step to creating a solution (potentially an app) is to learn from other people in the community (this is where you come in) and gain insights into the issue and uncover areas of opportunity. I reached out via the Chainlink to reach a large diverse sample of bikers (like you), so that everyone's voice is heard.

Here are some questions I have:

+ Do you bike? (i'm guessing you do if you're reading this on the Chainlink.)

+ How often do you ride?

+ What are challenges do you have riding?

+ What do you do when you see cars parked in bike lanes?

+ Do you report?

+ Are there challenges with reporting?

+ Have you noticed progress with reporting?

+ How could the process be made easier?

Happy cycling!

My question for the forum is:

The ride from the end of the Lake Shore Trail through Indiana is my only real concern. I've heard and read scary tales of not so great neighborhoods and sketchy roads--any advice? I'm planning on DRIVING part of it this weekend to get a feel for what I'm up against.

Any and all advice welcome! I know it can be done and wanted to reach out to the veterans!

Sloan
Getting to Downers Grove (McCullom park)tag:thechainlink.org,2014-08-26:2211490:Topic:8508362014-08-26T17:03:26.635ZChitown_Mikehttps://thechainlink.org/profile/MikeRenkosiak

So, anyone have any good routes to Downers Grove? I live on the far NW side of Chicago and have ridden out there before, HOWEVER I rode out there through Maywood and had some troubles in a few spots (aka someone broke a bottle right in front of me on purpose). Plus some of the IPP is dirt/crushed stone and with all this rain will suck on 23mm tires, and I'd rather not ride my commuter/MTB out there.

I have the Bike Guide app (great app by the way) and tried Google maps but they both want to put me on the Illinois Prairie Path and through Maywood. I have no issues riding on the road and busy streets don't bother me much, especially since this will be early morning (6 am ish) on Labor Day when I need to make the trek out there. Any suggestions?

My options seem to be 25th to Butterfield to Meyer/Fairview and ride that in.

Or 25th to a short trip on Butterfield to Wolf to Ogden to Naperville Rd and in.

OR 25th to Hillgrove (which looks passable on Google maps) and in.

I have a coworker that suggested 25th to Butterfield to Wolf to (or bypass Butterfield and Wolf) 31st west to Meter/Fairview and that leads me into the neighborhood that the park is in.

Distance really isn't an issue, I'll hammer out the 25-30 miles without an issue but safety is my concern and last time I rode side streets and it took stinkin' forever.
Best location for rear lights - thoughts, suggestions, discussiontag:thechainlink.org,2014-02-14:2211490:Topic:7959772014-02-14T17:55:51.204ZChitown_Mikehttps://thechainlink.org/profile/MikeRenkosiak

I did a search and couldn't find anything in regards to talking about where folks have found the best place to run a rear tail light. I have usually run them on either a saddle bag or the seat post, but recently I have it mounted to the left side upper seat stay. But I realize that approaching cars behind other cars may not see the light. I do ride with a yellow back pack, bright yellow windbreaker, and I ride predictably so I am not darting to a fro, or running lights/stops.…

I am by no means against another light, but I don't want to look like a nightclub DJ from the back! I have been thinking about getting another light, I currently run a PDW Radbot 1000 (REALLY like the light) on the back but couldn't hurt to get another.

Where have other been running theirs? Or perhaps where have you seen other cyclists mount theirs and made it more visible? Perhaps something helmet mounted? What is making you the most noticeable to our fellow (distracted at times) road users?

Friends,

Traffic in my little community (the Quad Cities, west of Chicago on the Mississippi River) is immeasurably worse when school is in session because just about everyone drives their children to school.
I want to start a clamor for safe routes and more kids on bikes, but I'm not sure what authority types I should speak to, nor how I can recruit ordinary parents and kids to join the chorus.

Please suggest to whom I should be speaking and what further substance I can offer to bolster the argument.

Many thanks,

Hi,

Any bikers out there commuting into the city from the western suburbs? Here is a link to a route I found. I rode half of it up to Central Ave & it was pleasant except for being on a few fast traffic areas for a short time. Anyone know how creepy it is on Jackson between Austin & Ashland? Better routes would be appreciated!
