Are they any other regular users of the newish Elston protected bike lanes...north of Milwaukee ave? Before the bike lanes, that roadway benefitted from very regular street sweeping. Now, the bike lanes have been sectioned off, and are a bit of a glassy mess. Does anyone who reads this blog have a relationship with city officials responsible for maintenance? Is there any hope even minimal sweeping can be done? I haven't had any luck through 311. And plan on investing in some more puncture proof tires soon out of necessity.
Who cares for the LFT???tag:thechainlink.org,2016-03-21:2211490:Topic:9759212016-03-21T17:05:56.914ZAndrew Bednohttps://thechainlink.org/profile/AndrewBedno

As a daily bike commuter on the lakefront path on and off for years, I've often felt insulted by how long serious life-threatening surface condition problems are allowed to persist.
This year in particular though the problems are so egregious and dangerous, some now months old, I felt something had to be said.

I've tried the 311 app for several problems such as a specific huge pothole, and a boulder on the path (too large for one person to move, a construction crew left it there), and gotten "the problem has been resolved" messages back a few days later, with nothing actually done. The boulder one I even resubmitted, and got the same reply again, though it's still there.

I figured next step is contact the appropriate agency directly, but not sure who that is.

I don't know very much about bike maintenance, don't yet have the proper tools for it, and since it's winter and I live in an apartment, there isn't really a good place to do it. It's definitely pretty grungy, and my chain has been slipping gears some.

But it costs $170. I get free cleanings/lube after that until the end of March, which seems awesome. But if I had bought the package it in October, I would have gotten more for my money.

Is this service worth it? Are there other bike shops that have discounts, since winter business is probably slower? What do you guys do for winter maintenance?

One of the sad parts about moving from the suburbs where I had a large garage and basement, is that my condo association takes a dim view of using dangerous chemicals and stuff in the deeded parking section of our building. The result is that all my tools, stands, etc. are at my daughter's home (many miles away) and my old bike (Fiji Suncrest with narrow tires) looks like the clunker it is. No one would want to steal it, but I do like something that looks and operates…

Maybe it was just in my head, but after cleaning and lubing my chain this morning, my bike just felt great! My cadence was smoother, I felt like I was getting more power per pedal, and it was definitely quieter. Which go me thinking:

What else should I be doing regularly? I keep my tires inflated to their recommended PSI, and now I'll be at least a once-a-week chain luber. But what other regular maintenance should I be perfroming on my bike?
Are Pitted Cones Replacable?tag:thechainlink.org,2010-03-06:2211490:Topic:1622452010-03-06T08:30:30.610ZTank-Ridin' Ryanhttps://thechainlink.org/profile/Tank
I was overhauling the hubs of my mountain bike and cones on the front hub are badly pitted. I'm not sure how the inside of the hub body looks, but I'd suspect it's not in good shape either. (The bike is 3 and a half years old.)

A couple questions:

1. Is there a way I can test for pitting in the hub body (like the way a ballpoint pen can feel pits on cones)?

2. If the hub body is ok, can I go to a shop with my axle and buy a cone or set of cones?

I have gone through about a spoke a week on my rear wheel for the last five weeks. I have been to two different bikes shops to try and solve the problem. Both shops say my wheel looks fine and have identified the problem as bad truing. One mechanic thought it was b/c I did not have DT spokes.
Here's some info about my bike:
--Schwinn Cream, I've had it for just over a year
--Internal Shimano 3-speed (few months newer than the bike)
--Spokes have broken on both sides (not just the driver side)
--The breaks I've heard have been after a bump. Today the break was as I was pedaling as I was leading off from a stopping position. It seemed to happen right as I was shifting gears but I guess that is a coincidence.
--I usually ride with a pannier on the one side but it rarely has more than 5-15 pounds in it.
--I have broken spokes here and there but never continuously like this.

Thank you for your time and advice!
