Hey all! You've possibly already seen me gush about the Occam Cycle.

This Saturday from 11am to 1pm the guys are going to be doing demo rides near the Adler Planetarium. I was talking to one of them about whether they were planning to get some new footage to upload online (always a useful thing to do with Kickstarter campaigns, I feel), to further demonstrate how easy it is for newbies to ride, but he said that they don't have the equipment or the budget for it.

If anyone with a nice video camera feels like showing up and donating some of their time to get some footage of the Occam in action, I'm sure it would be appreciated :) I'll put you in touch with the inventors to make sure it's something that they actually want (it seemed like it was). If it all goes splendidly, you might even be able to make some sort of deal, like an at-cost bike if the Kickstarter succeeds (I'm not directly involved, I'm just a huge supporter because they are my friends, so no promises).

So, anyone up for it? It's a long shot, but I figured I'd try!
Kickstarter for a Chicago-designed folding biketag:thechainlink.org,2014-08-28:2211490:Topic:8519372014-08-28T21:13:03.159ZChristine (5.0)https://thechainlink.org/profile/ChristinePrice

I'm super excited because some brilliant guys I know have finally released a kickstarter for a new type of folding bike they've been developing on and off again for the past three years :)

It's kind of niche, and definitely not for everyone. But it's wonderfully designed, affordable, and solves the "last mile problem" quite well. I could see it being best for Metra uses who currently use Divvy during rush hour, and who are tired of full/empty docks, or for people who work in areas where leaving your bike locked up outside would result in theft. I think it's better than a few other sanding bikes I have seen (Halfbike, and some other one) because the gearing is so high; you can be quite zippy with just a walking cadence.

Anyway, it's neat, eh?

It's on kickstarter. It's from Chicago. It looks like a small and great idea, and I'm backing it. It fits in a custom water bottle cage that they give you.

Just thought I would share.

What is this project about?

We want to capture the spirit of vibrant retail districts in a colorful, entertaining coffee table book. We’re inspired by the thousands of independent retailers that make a difference in neighborhoods across America each and every day.

More than just having merchandise to sell, our mom & pop shopkeepers are community boosters and activists. Small stores such as bike shops, pet stores, toy stores, and boutiques are supporters of local non-profit organizations, animal shelters, and theater groups. These unique shops are neighborhood treasures and benefit local economies as a whole.

We'd like to spotlight a variety of shops in an engaging coffee table book. We'll share retailers' and small business advocates' thoughts on the past, present and future of independent retail.

Our outcome:

Our bottom line goal is to spread the word about hardworking independent retailers in our nation. We want to showcase the spirit and diversity of small shops and help them reach wider audiences.
