We are having an open house this Sunday and were wondering what kind of bicycle frame building demonstrations you folks would be interested in seeing?

- We might have a fork to be brazed up.

- Maybe a little welding

- We'll have a tubeset in the jig, so you can see what it looks like before its welded.

- Most likely have a wheel to be built up

There will also be test rides of Legacy Bikes - if you haven't experienced a belt drive bike, now is your chance.

Hi! Could anyone help please? What's the typical cost of labor in workshops to build a bike from components? If I bought a frame and all the necessary components separately, how much would it cost to install crankset, brakes, derailleurs, shifters, all cables, cut a fork post, press headset cups etc? And can you recommend inexpensive, but still good bike workshop in north-west suburbs, that works on Saturdays or Sundays?

Thanx

Hey dudes! Im Roach.

Ive been wanting to get a bike trailer for ages and just recently acquired a frame for my bday!

Im not sure what brand of frame this is nor if there's a site to buy just the shell and possibly a bottom board (?) that will hold a good amount of weight. Does anyone have any idea how i can alter this? PLEASE AND THANK…

I am offering wheel building services. Bring any hub and wheel combos (as long as the number of spokes holes is the same) then tell me what type of spokes you want. I determine the spoke length and build the wheels. Builds offered are as follows:

Basic build: the spoke threads are preped, the nipples seats are preped with antiseeze. Then the wheels are built and trued to within +/- .25mm of lateral and radial true (for used rims tolerances may be greater). Spokes are also pre seated and…
Basic build: the spoke threads are preped, the nipples seats are preped with antiseeze. Then the wheels are built and trued to within +/- .25mm of lateral and radial true (for used rims tolerances may be greater). Spokes are also pre seated and stressed. All spokes are tensioned within +\- 15% of the average for the wheel.

Premium build: same as the basic build but wheels are trued to within +/- .08mm of lateral and radial true and all spokes are tensioned to within +\- 10% of the average (again with used rims tolerances are greater). This tight tollerance of spoke tension combined with the pre seating of spokes mass the wheels extremely strong and maximizes the time in between wheel trues

I also offer upgades to grade 25 stainless bearings with Phil Wood grease for loose ball hubs.

Prices are as follows

Basic built wheel: $50 plus the cost of spokes
Basic built wheelset: $90 plus the cost of spokes
Premium built wheel: $100 plus the cost of spokes
Premium built wheelset: $175 plus the cost of spokes
Loose ball hub upgrade: $30
Loose ball hubset upgrade: $50
I know my stuff when it comes to keeping my bike rideable. I even know the pros and cons of different style components (usually)... but people seem to go bonkers for a great frame. I only know to care about general weight, durability, and sizing. I guess the dropouts and bottom bracket should be OK, but what is it - really??
I'm not talking about carbon fiber racers here, or the difference of a few grams. It just seems that people seem to shrug at frames I thought were great or jump at…

I'm not talking about carbon fiber racers here, or the difference of a few grams. It just seems that people seem to shrug at frames I thought were great or jump at ones I assumed were so-so. I often fall for an old school style or funky colors, but that's not right.
So, who can tell me what really makes a frame great? What crazy ideas do you have for me?tag:thechainlink.org,2008-12-23:2211490:Topic:333882008-12-23T16:42:02.964ZGabeW (not the other Gabe)https://thechainlink.org/profile/Gabe30
I've given plenty of advice (probably too much) procrastinating on chainlink at work, so now I'm asking for yours chainlinkers:

I just picked up two cheapo junkers on craigslist, and I'm trying to decide what to do with them. The ladies shwinn is basically a frame and fork, but fits my wife (who needs a junker) and the other is a working no name 3speed/coaster internal hub bike that fits me (I've already got a junker, but the price was right).
a) swap the parts to the schwinn and get wifey up and riding.

b) use both frames and the mtb i've had sitting around to build a custom tandem http://sheldonbrown.com/tandem-build.html

c) give the 3speed to my dad and take back my trek 930

d) build up the schwinn as a fixie to be ready for the summer and sell the 3speed for what I paid for both to begin with ($10 for the schwinn + $40 for the 3speed)
I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the late Sheldon Brown and his wonderful online resource. The other day at work I was reading his homebuilt tandem page and got the itch.
<
Does anyone have any experience doing this? I have Brazing equipment, but didn't realize it was strong enough (assumed bikes need welds, but what do I know?). I'm planning on using two old road bikes (cheep/free schwinn or raleigh) for style, and a steel mountain fork and wheels for strength. I've got an old donor…

I'm planning on using two old road bikes (cheep/free schwinn or raleigh) for style, and a steel mountain fork and wheels for strength. I've got an old donor mountain bike already, and I'll use the cassette and rear derailleur for a simple 7 speed drivetrain. No front derailleurs or crazy crossover drive stuff.

I know it's a little crazy, but read the last line of Sheldon's article and you'll get it.
I'd like to hear what helps to get around when the roads are at their worst.

I'm looking to put together a beefier ride for this winter but I'm not sure where to even start.. I know I want a SS, freewheel, and big knobby tires with fenders. Beyond that - kinda clueless.

Should I look at mountain bike frames? Are there any good complete builds on the market?
