Description

No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

It's about riding to Three Floyds and boosting our cognitive function every month this year! There's a somewhat consistent schedule -- usually the 4th Saturday of the month -- and you can qualify for the F-12 Award.

Meet between 7:30 and 8 at Intelligentsia Broadway to warm up and caffeinate. We then take Barry east and the lakefront trail south. Feel free to join up anywhere along the trail. Just let us know where so we can look for you.

42 miles total if to return you ride to Hammond and take the South Shore Line, 45 if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 50 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 55 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 70 if you ride all the way. 16-19 mph. Three Floyds is the seventh-best brewery in the world, and the food, like the beer, is unapologetically in your face with flavor, so sometimes there's a line. Bring money, government-issued ID, a lock, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago.

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, South Shore Line schedule, Metra Electric train schedules, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Bikes on the South Shore Line, Bikes on the Metra, Bikes on the Bus, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

PS: I give these rides these names because I find them humorous in an ironic way. It's not my intent to make light of addictions, efforts to recover from addictions, or 12-step peer support groups like AA. If you're trying to drink in moderation, we'll support you. If you're trying to abstain, you may want to give this ride a pass.

new since last time:

  • Temple of the Sun
    7% ABV 70 IBU $5 Imperial Pint/5oz pour $2

Our second collaboration with the mighty Skeletonwitch is a kettle-soured IPA brewed with loads of Southern Hemisphere hops. This tart, refreshing ale with lingering notes of tropical fruit, raspberry and currants celebrates the "individual" in all of us and illuminates the path.

  • SadoMagicAle
    6.66% ABV 33 IBU $7 19.2oz can

Alchemic knowledge yields pleasure in both sweet and tart malt-derived flavors while dry hops add lemon and pineapple aroma in this amber-hued ale.

  • BattlePüss
    9.5% ABV 98 IBU $5 Snifter/5oz pour $3

A bright amber double IPA with tangerine, dark berry, lemon and pine aromas. Medium-bodied with a warming, long, moderately bitter finish.

  • Psychonaught
    5.8% ABV 58 IBU $5 Stein / 5oz pour $2

Easy-drinking cousin of Dread and Alpha Naught. This lager is brewed with the finest experimental hops from Alsace, France.

also of interest:

  • Evil Twin Grand Cru Cuvée Double Barrel Edition
    12.5% ABV $10 16oz can

Maple Bourbon and Marsala wine barrel aged stout and barley wine style ale blend.

  • Founders KBS
    11.2% ABV $12 12 oz Bottle

A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Their process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew.
