Update:
Robert Vais has been charged with aggravated drunken driving for the incident which resulted in the death of Hector Avalos on December 6, 2013 as Hector rode his bike home from work at El Hefe in River North. Cook County prosecutors have alleged that Robert Vais's Blood Alcohol Level was .118 at the time of the fatal collision. This is an important court hearing where Judge Ford will give a recommended sentence for Defendant Robert Vais to his attorneys. The attorneys and Robert Vais do not have to accept the recommended sentence and can continue to trial. The Chicago bike community's presence will help remind the court system that this case and Hector's life are important to us.

I am currently planning on riding tomorrow morning, but if carpool availability will allow someone from Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Bucktown, Wicker Park, Belmont-Cragin, E Garfield Park, West Town, Ukrainian Village, etc. to attend who otherwise couldn't, I'm happy to drive.  Similarly, if anyone else who's cycling is concerned about not having a place to stow phones, bags, helmets, etc, I'd be happy to drive and make my car available for such.  Just drop a line here or PM me if interested.

Thanks Meghanne, this is good to remember. Earlier this week, a number of advocates had difficulty with security for helmets and water bottles.

I'm planning to be there as long as it takes.

Eli and Yasmeen:

In my experience, though the time is listed at 9:30, often hearings slated for this time don't get underway until 10:30, and there have been days when I have had to leave at noon without Hector's case being called. You should certainly come prepared to wait.

Security doesn't usually take very long, but last time I was there I was turned away because officers are no longer allowing advocates to bring in helmets: make sure to lock these up outside if you ride.

Hi Eli,

They ask us to get there 30 minutes ahead of time to give time to get through security, etc. I wasn't sure how long this will last, how many cases are at that same time so I put the "end time" at 2 pm as an estimate. I'm planning on keeping that day open. Does anyone have any insight they can provide as far as what to expect for the timing of the court date?

I see that the time is listed as 9:30AM-2PM. Is that accurate? Is it the case that court begins at 10:00 and we don't know when this case will be heard? I'm asking to figure out whether I should be taking the morning off work or the full day.

I'm planning on attending. It's an important court date to show our support.

On a side note, my niece worked with him at El Hefe. She said he was such a nice guy. This case and Bobby Cann's are very important to show our support when we can.
